Standard operating procedure. Building inventory. Check your December price list Atlantic wasn't on it.

Is anyone milking any Atwoods out of Shottle cows?

If so, how do they look and perform?

Or does anyone have any heifers to come in?

Does Atwood have big calves?

Atwood does not throw big calves.

I saw a few Atwoods showing at a county fair this weekend. The 2yr milking heifer looked narrow in the front end. I didn't think she was anything fancy, though she looked as though she could milk. A couple other heifers that really didn't impress me either, one of which was overweight. Hopefully others are better.

I hear you on that one. We have 5 heifers and they dont stand out in their pens. I expected them to be fancy. Our Guthries blow them away. But you keep seeing them win classes at shows.

That is the Durham influence coming through. I don't know if those discussions are in the archive here, or were part of the battles on Holsteinonline or Holsteinworld when they had forums. But smart show and type guys were just sure that Durham was a fraud before they calved. We used him very early, and had milking daughters while others were still looking at yearlings. He sired every sort of heifer. The rolley polley, the show winner, the undersized, the fatso, the plain jane, and the eyecatcher. What held true was that the parts were there, the overall package wasn't appealing until they had an udder on and were standing in the barn milking.

Odds are if you look at them they are doing some nice things though. Deep heel, long neck, spring and rear depth of rib. Wish the pins weren't so high though.

Reading all this, I still don't understand why this bull is still so hyped. There must be better bulls around I hope. Or maybe too many people (AI, sales persons, show breeders) have too much invested in Atwood and his full brothers (who have a similar breeding pattern) that it's not the time yet so say he was a failure. We will see in a few years.
