Monty x Jersey x Ho

Just wondering if anyone is doing this rotation for crossing and what their experience thus far is. I know the Procross appears to be a good success but I like working with the Je and Ho. I've done a fair amount of Ay x Je x Ho and some Swiss x Je x Ho. Is there a benefit to using Monty over Ayrshire (I'm including all the nordic reds in my use of the word Ayrshire...)?

I just calved in my third Mo x Je x Ho. The third hasn't had a test yet but could be better than the other two even though she has a blind quarter (3 of last 4 heifer have come in with blind quarters). With such low numbers, I'm not pleased with the rotation. They don't have problems, they breed back, but they are below average on milk volume (compared to xbreds) and worse on components (compared to Ho's and xbreds). I really like my Swedish/Norwegian Red crosses.

Looks like I've only had about 2-4 of this cross in my production results. I do have one tremendous individual example of this cross. Where with such a small sample the numbers have gone up and down.

I'll have more of that cross coming in this year. I have a beautiful Urbaniste X Jersey X Holstein in the pre fresh pen right now. I've aimed to breed more of my HoJos to Fleckvieh/Montbeliarde as I think the Nordic Red X Jersey X Holstein have lacked a bit of production in my system. I think there might be more production upside with the Monty X HoJo.

Though if somebody asked me what's worked best on my HoJos, my honest answer would have to be Brown Swiss.

And maybe I'm reading into things too much, I do find it interesting that you ask given your connections to a certain cooperative emoticon

I've been hearing things from both France and the USA that I hope things work out, and I'll just leave it at that emoticon

Yeah, they are now carrying Valfin, Appolo and Tarn. I have 20 units of Valfin coming and was just trying to figure out what to put him in. I've been trying out more and more Brown Swiss in the HoJos. I don't have any of those milking. The HoJeAy combo is ok... thus far on my dairy, I just wish it had more milk. They are ending up closer to the Jersey in size so I guess they aren't doing that bad (24000lb milk, 4.6F 3.7P). I'm just struggling with what to have for a third breed. HoJos are great, HoAy are great, HoBS are great... but whenever I put a third one in I just seem to lose a lot of milk and oddly the components are as high as I would have thought. I've been thinking about just going with a two way rotation of HoJo with some of them to see how that would work.

Would I have problems if I put Valfin in those heifers?

What about going back to Holstein and then a 3rd breed after that? I'm trying Holstein every other generation after losing to much milk on the normal 3 way cross. Using a mix of Brown Swiss, Fleckvieh and Viking Red as the other breeds.

He's about as good as they come for calving ease. I wouldn't worry too much about using him on crossbred heifers.

My experience of Valfin calves on Holstein is that they are incredibly long calves. The legs can occasionally get tangled and you get a foot down at calving, but that could also be down to the holstein's relatively poor ability to eject calves.

I'm not calling him hard calving, but I wouldn't say easy either because their length can make them quite awkward. I think his french calving ease is a little over-rated.

One bull that has been popping out very well lately, and IMHO very easy calving, is Bogoro, also a JB bull. Pity he has recently gone negative on milk.

I've thought of doing some of that as well.

FOAF, thanks for the calving info, I'll keep that in mind.

Just got my Valfin order in, first one will calve in June.

I'm getting a pretty good deal under retail on him.
