If type is not top of your priorities I would steer clear of shottle soft feet, if they go lame they will always be lame and fertility is not the best either.I am milking 20+ shottles here on the whole I really like them but stopped using him 3 years ago . Freddie/ Iota & Planet are better bets today.I can't get Freddie so have used McCormick instead along with some Iota for Oman blood here.

If you are worried about feed problems i would stay away from planet also. I have only 10 of them and I always seem to have at least one in the hospital herd lame. 3 in there currently.

How are you paid for your milk?

If its on composition are Shottle and Planet really the way to go?

So many variables without more knowledge of your dairy system.

None of the above listed bulls would be any good to us people on an A + B - C (A=protein kg, B=Fat kg and C is water deduction)

Lief (if you can get any semen)
and Morningview Legend
As a bonus both have hard hooves (at least mine have)

Bazza don't forget these are specifically freestall cows ,it's in this environment that planet made his reputation out of interest what's the main cause of your planets lameness

Foot rot initially ( every single one got it) and now abscesses due to injuries to soft feet.

I did also read an article about Rosy-Lane Holsteins and they said their planets weren't lasting. So I'm not the only one.

Currently of the three in the hospital herd 2 have been in there about 6 weeks. Sure they may milk well but that's not making me any money.

I will have some great planets no doubt but as an all round commerical bull he isn't one I would choose.

Freddie or Iota for an Oman son
Planet has treated us well, if not him substitute Bookem, really like ours so far.

I would say Freddie and mogul. Rely like the looks of his early daughters on Facebook. Not a bad comment yet. Type guys say they can look " bully" I could care less haha. Great fl udders and strength, with plenty of milk. Not many bad words about freddie either. I would stay away from Sanchez braxton etc. Really like our OCD robust smokin Jo heifers. Wide, deep, lots of spring good fl and small in stature.

I would tell you that Shottle was the bull that really set us up to have some success breeding cows that fit the current market, and that is not out of arrogance, but from appreciation for Shottles influence. Ours tended to be on the rounder, strong side. Heavy boned with good feet, udders good but not exceptional.
We had 3 that we flushed quite a bit that made us look smarter than we are.
Shottle Ticker 594 was from a VG Laudan from Patron Tanya, and from her we got Planet Tasket 788 at Genex Moet.
Shottle Ili we bought as a pick of litter from Regancrest Ito Isa. We sold 8 sons to stud, have lots of good dtrs(90pt Planet), and she is the dam of Ms Pride Gold Invite 761 who has done well for Blondin/Crasdale.
Shottle Tootles was from an Ex Ramos, and her Freddie dtr Tata 905, is the dam of Tampa, Twister, Tallyho all at stud.

We were lucky to use him at the right time on some good cows, and Planet, Goldwyn, and Freddie all complimented his dtrs here. If available for the right price, I can understand using him today if you have the right bloodlines in your herd. Sorry for the essay!

By using planet widely through a herd wont you eventually get a bunch that live up to his poor feet and legs.
