What price may 2015 I dread to think
Nasty little rumour that we could go below 20p once the spring calving herds get going, from a usually reliable source.
The UK processors don't want these huge spring flushes and they'll not be rushing to put any politically engineered solution to the current situation in place before July.

Re: Milk price
Where to now? Is it a dead cat bounce on Fonterra's auction or has the trimmed production forecast paid out already?
At least UK powder isn't now at a discount to the world price - if only that could be maintained the spring flush problem might be surmountable.
Wonder how close to last years production level this cold snap has brought us?

Slight step in the right direction today, united up 0.5 pence per litre base price.

Re: Milk price
Word is that the spot price in the UK is about 26p per litre.
Arla are apparently looking to recruit 50 million litres.
Looks like the trough might be behind us.

Re:
I hope so, tho there are rumours of a double dip in April when quota in the Republic of Ireland goes and the spring calving herds start. Just to put that into context dale farm northern Ireland supplied x amount of litres in December, the Republic of Ireland as a whole, supplied 48% of x. Not much milk down there at the minute.

Re:
In the grand scale of things, what we produce down here (ROI) will have very little effect on global milk prices...we are but a drop in a vast ocean.
Yes supply here is down in early Spring with the vast majority of Spring calving herds not hitting peak flow until April/May but I don't see this as being the reason milk price has stabilised.
More likely drought in New Zealand is the reason

Re:
I think you are mostly right mckeague. But it strikes me that to only have a very modest spot price at a time when production is still seasonally lower in the UK, and with no milk in ROI at present, doesn't say much positive about the market.
I don't think ROI has the ability to influence world markets, but it certainly has the ability to influence the British Isles spot price around the spring peak. I have no doubt that we do face a future where there will be seasons where there will be too much spring milk and it will be travelling all over the place to find a home that will process it. Depending on where the global market is at that time, it could be very bad indeed for the value of milk not going into a contracted product.

Re:
Possibly right FOAF, but does that say more about the ability of the UK processors to provide capacity to process the milk and to find enough markets for their product?
Suppliers in the south are expanding production as their co-ops are expanding their processing capacity, the co-ops are telling their suppliers they want more milk as they have markets for value added products.
I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the way ROI suppliers may be getting blamed for what is happening in the UK?
Although I may have misread the posts!!

At current exchange rates that works out at 35.5c/l....I'd take it!

Re:
Globally I think we have turned a corner but the uk and Ireland will face a tricky spring with a wide range of prices between procesers with an unbelievable 20ppl gap between top and bottom . Then the recovery will hopefully start but volatility is here to stay in Europe now .
