Jersey Type sires

Curious as to how many jersey breeders are on Cowtalk as there is never much discussion on the breed here

Looking for breeder thoughts on jersey type sires to use over the next year on my small (but growing) herd of jerseys. I expect to pick up a few more breeding age pedigreed heifers in the next month or two. Please let me know your thoughts on the following group as I need to start adding to the tank for breedings this summer. Sexed semen would take preference as I do have kids who want heifers to show.

If I missed any sires please feel free to add in your thoughts

Hired Gun: He has been around for long enough now. How are breeders liking the milking daughters? How are udder attachments? He is available sexed and is one of the most affordable sexed which is a bonus

Tequila: Needs little introduction. Are udders from this bull really that welded on in everyone's herds? I have heard that milk on tequilas can be very, very bad. What is the general consensus on him? Available sexed.

Gorgeous/Rumour sons: Have heard that udders can be shifty on daughters. Have also heard that milk and DPR can be horrendous. Have not used any of these bulls. Any Cowtalk members have experience? The Rapid Bay bulls are only available as conventional.

Cheers: He is a new Tequila son of Veronicas' Comet EX94. He is getting a lot of use in the show arena. I cannot find a proof on him anywhere. Not sexed.

Impression: He makes fancy show heifers. Biggest concern for me is early milking daughters do not look overly impressive. Is he a gamble? Only conventional semen.

Incentive: Tequila brother to Impression. Would be my choice to use vs Impression for overall udder quality. Do you have calves on the ground and if so/ how do they look thus far?

Irresistible: Irwin brother to Incentive and Impression. We have not seen any daughters of his in person. Will he make them showy?

Applejack: Iatola son available sexed. Udders on daughters are supposed to be some of the best. Only concern is flat bone from this bull.

Gameplan: The only Applejack son available. He is not sexed, only conventional. His dam is an Ex91 Action. I would expect udders to be better than his genomics lead on?

DRAGON: Topeka x EX95 Connection x Ex92 Centurion. One of the most intriguing bulls available from Hometown. He is +30 JUI and +3.4 PL.

Primero: Marvel x Hired Gun x Action x Mannix. His JUI is over +40 which is highest in the breed. Udder traits are +[sign in to see URL] to +[sign in to see URL]. The only bull in an AI company with Hired Gun in the top of the pedigree.

Full Throttle: Premier x Ex94 Action. From the Berretta Felice EX95 family. Semen is proving hard to get in my area.

Premier: Q Impuls x Jace EX95. Interesting outcross pedigree. Do any posters have milking daughters? Currently being used heavily as a sire of sons for type. Also siring show winners in the heifer classes. He is available sexed.

Colton/Chavez. Full brothers; one available from Select and the other from Semex. Action x Connection x Circus Ex97. Good type, DPR, and PL. Available sexed.

BW Citation: Irwin x EX92 Centurion x Ex90 Avery x Ex92 Berretta. Decent production from a high type family. Highest UDC genomic bull at Select. Only available conventional.

Grayson: Jade x Griffen EX95. Another bull that has been around for some time but have not heard much from. A Jade son, like Hired gun. Have you used him and if so, what are daughters like.

Firepower: Tequila from Royalty Ridge. Receiving a lot of show use. Only concern is milk from this bull being a Tequila son. thoughts?

Karbala: iatola x Centurion x Avery. Supposedly siring very good udders. Any experience with milking daughters of his?

Ladd: Karbala x Legion x Cosmo. A Karbala son, he is very high in JUI and hails from the Goldust herd.

I did forget one on my list

BW Theone. He is a Governor x EX95 Centurion. He is available through Taurus/ Sexing Tech and is available sexed. His milk numbers really are not bad considering his sire stack. He is a Governor son who has been hiding in the weeds; any thoughts on him for show type?

Re: Re:

I use Jersey for crossbreeding and have a handful of pure Jerseys of which are getting fewer and fewer each month it seems.

I used Governor as a young sire and was impressed with his type.

Another bull that I liked for type was DJ Zuma. His production is lower and he seemed to loose Net Merit and some type since I bought him a few years ago. I have some semen out of him sexed that I might be willing to move.

thank you! Do you know if Governor semen is still available through Select?

I am a fan of DJ Zuma and Q Impuls just worry that they will keep the flat bone and show style needed for the kids to show at the bigger shows.

I've only got a a few and really in the same boat as you not really knowing the breed too well . I get the impression that tequila is like Goldwyn in as much they need to be by him to win I'm also very concerned about the lack of milk, I have a very smart legal heifer that might end up breed to tequila as they are only here to look pretty really

I would not mind Tequila on a heifer from proven milk in her pedigree. Can't breed no milk to no milk and expect to get production. I like Legal and think Tequila might be an interesting cross. Have you considered a Tequila son?

Yes I would, I was working with the group that contains the legal heifer today . Jerseys are still like little aliens to me but I think that type wise she is every bit as good as my b&w Golden dreams heifers and they are this years stand out heifers.

I have 2 off-age legal heifers (1 is sired by Legal and the second is sired by a Legal son). Both are very tall, strong tops and good legs. They could use a more depth but they have not approached their 1 yr birthday yet. I am looking forward to seeing them calve in.
