Eryl,

I just calved a Laurelhill Regent daughter. Not a bad heifer, quite similar to it's mother.

With you mentioning outcross, it set me thinking that you were trying to source some old genuine outcross bulls. Did you have any luck finding any?

I spoke to a guy recently that had bought 20 straws of Bridon Astro Jet a while back. He had great fortune with the semen, getting something like 11 heifers! They were now milking and he was really pleased with them.

Ed Seaton at Styche has a really nice Regent daughter that he pictured on facebook. I am keeping my fingers crossed for a bit of heterosis effect to lift his proof above his genomics...

I am milking an Avoncroft (Glenafton) Matchmaker ... a really nice robust heifer, ideal for commercial conditions and carrying much more condition than her contemporaries by modern sires. Served and back in calf at [sign in to see URL] days. It will be interesting to see how her yield persists, as she has been right on herd average in early lactation.

The difficulty with the old Holstein sires is that many of the iconic bulls were before North American semen qualified for the UK. I do have a collection of straws from 'golden oldies' (varying degrees of outcross) that I didn't put on the list above including:

Holstein

Ronbeth Tradesman
High Point Astro Pat
Rowntree marquis Design
Bondhaven lancer
Hanoverhill Ambassador
Browndale Spartan
(MMB) Sunnylodge Supreme
(MMB) Thamesdale Superstar
Pickland Bootmaker Rob
(Noremead) Roybrook Perfection
Meadolake Jubilant
Puget-Sound OVS Envoy
A Butlerview Mattador
Avoncroft Matchmaker
Erinwood RA Jonathan
Shen-Val Formation
hanoverhill Sabastian
Hanoverhill Mirage
Willowholme mark Anthony
Hanoverhill Raider
Granduc Tribute
Deslacs Midnight
Bridon Astro Jet
Canyon-Breeze Allen
Jocko Besne
Maughlin Storm (hmmm .... HCD)

British Friesian

Ridgwardine Dale
Ridgwardine Judo
Petteril Magnet

I have Magnet and Judo calves from Holstein cows that trace back to the Terling Torch and lavenham Seabreeze families that I am reverting back to Friesian...

The main difficulty is that with Scandinavian Reds, British Friesians, outcross Holsteins and high genomic Holsteins there are only so many breeding projects one can fit into one herd....

... especially as we're reducing cow numbers and on the move in your direction (and a bit further) to TB free seclusion..

Won't add anything this year I guess. Happy with my old guys, seem to be doing better then the younger ones these days. With low input grass based diets seem strength seems to be the prominent factor for survival, and that's easier found with older bulls then with the modern Durham/Goldwyn/Planet pedigreed bulls.

Durham, modern pedigree??

And the three examples of "modern" pedigrees you used are in my opinion poor examples for grass based diets anyway. plenty of better example from the same years as those bulls.
