Smous, the calving ease figures you look for are they the same regardless of whether the bull was proven or genomic?

No, we want genomic bulls lower. I am selling one genomic bull at 6.9%CE, the next highest is 5.8%CE. That said my highest calving ease proven main hit bull is 6.4%CE, two of my follow up bulls are 6.6%CE.

Stellar Mogul sons: Mr Mogul Delta, EDG Rubicon, Woodcrest Mogul Yoder, Bacon-Hill Montross, Coastal View Mookie. Mookie has done everything we want him to do, huge solids, great udders, excellent feed efficiency despite his low milk. He is still a big seller. Granted none of the above are perfect, but no bull is.

Man O Man flattered to deceive, interestingly the Kiwis and Aussies love him. He has been highly successful as a sire of sons for Genetics Australia.

I have to disagree with you as regards Planet, the bull is amazing as regards PL and Livability, they stick around, even in New Zealand he is great on longevity. He is negative for DPR but not HCR and CCR. His somatics at 3.05 are not ideal but not a train smash. Some of my favourite cows are the Plan daughters, he was one of the earliest genomic bulls sold and they fit our system. He is the Potter of his generation. They will make old bones.

Calving ease? I am very careful with genomic bulls, I want them in the very low 7s, but preferably in the 6s if there is no data. Cant say we have been badly bitten though. We did toss one bull when we got reports of big calves.

Planets didn’t do well for me. They didn’t last. Lots of feet problems and really struggled to get pregnant.

Bazza,

What bulls have been successful for you?

Also, what genomic bulls did you use instead of Mogul, who you said you didn't use as his health traits were never high enough for you.

Smous,

Can Montross really be considered stellar with his SCC?

I have reservations over Yoder's SCC as well.

Around the same time I used planet bulls like Freddie, McCormick and super were much more successful.

Around the time of mogul I instead used a heap of Petrone. Happy with my choice.

Bazza,

all those bulls you mentioned have turned out to be really solid. Petrone and Superstition stand out in particular for their productive life scores.

Possibly the only negative with those bulls would be milk solids. Oman aside, it is often the case that great health traits come in combination with low components. I often wonder if the cow's metabolic system kind of has to make a choice between components and health.

The April 2018 proofs has seen Montross' Fertility Index drop from +2.0 to -0.1.

What a crock Errolston, are you still questioning genomics? How long ago was that round table?

Sold thousands of doses of Fairfax, Mookie, Trenton and Equinox as genomic bulls. Look where they are now. Milk to me seems to be the most variable trait.

Granted our early forays trying to find outcrosses had less than stellar results, but the specific traits were were focused on, butterfat percent and PL and DPR all held up. It was milk that dropped us, and they were marginal milk bulls anyway.

Still think that Smous?

By the way. the round table in Holstein International that I referred to was about 3 years ago when the Supershot calves were being born and his calving ease genomic score turned out to be optimistic.

Now that's a bull that I am rather lukewarm on. Mainly for his very big lack of components. Some people are betting on Jett rather than Jedi.

Had my confidence somewhat shaken this week Errolston. Still very happy with the bulls I have sold, but apparently we have to re calibrate what we thought were good DPR figures. Rushed to check the older bulls and they have come through pretty much unscathed, thank the pope. DPR figures were stratospheric in December (too good to be true if we had taken a moment to consider) and now they have crashed. Feels like a kick in the nuts to tell the truth. Your gloating cheered me up immensely.
