Sexed semen flushing
Who here has tried sexed semen with flushing? How many units did you use? Should the conception of the embryos be the same as conventional? Thanks

Re: Sexed semen flushing
Don't do it! I always thought it would be worth a go, but know two people who have. One used 3 straws the other 6, total fertilized embryos = 0!!!

The only good results that come from it occur when flushing virgin heifers, from what I have heard.

Sexed semen flushing
we flushed a 2yr old with sexed blitz and got 4 good eggs out of 8 total. We used 3 straws. Our et vet said that their association was going to tell everybody not to do it because the results so far have been poor.

Re: Sexed semen flushing
It makes sense, considering CR are lower with sexed semen. Seeing how flushing can also produce very few if any good eggs with regular unsexed semen, it adds insult to injury. Also some have seen more heifers than bulls with the regular old semen with flushing. IMO take what you get from a flush, if you do get 2-3 heifers out of say 8-10 pregnancies. Atleast you did get 2-3 heifers, consistent heifers, vs none at all.

Sexed semen flushing
So far we havnt gone down that track as we flush or purchase embryos with the view that we like the pedigree enuf to use the bull calf. Our et vet and us work on the theory that you need roughly need 4 eggs to get 1 heifer and if you get more heifers it's a bonus(ie.25% chance of a heifer calf in any flush)

I just asked my vet and he said the same thing. ONLY on heifers and then you run the chance of unfertilized eggs. He has flushed a few with it but does not recommend it at all.

Sexed semen flushing
The sexed semen straw might only have a 1/4 of the sperm that a reg. straw has. And there is so much damage to the semen exposing it to the sexed semen process. I wonder if horn breeding these flush cows would help increase the preg rates. The closer you get these fewer sperm to the eggs the better chance of conception since it all takes place in the horn.

Sexed semen flushing
Are there enough good bulls that are "gender selected" that you would like to flush with? i just got a list of sorted female semen available from Select Sires. Blitz and Forbiddon are 2 bulls I would considor using but I think if i am gonna flush a cow I would choose something a bit different. Blitz looks good but for some reason his components worry me(-.19%F,-.20%P) Other then those bulls the sexed semen available is from second tier bulls. Until they start offering sexed semen on bulls like Dundee, Talent, Roy, Advent, ect I am not sure I would flush to the current lineup. Flushing is expensive and tricky enough, I want to make sure if i get a heifer it is one I really wanted. 3 blitz heifers may be nice, but if you have a chance to get more fertilized eggs from a bull you would rather use wouldn't that be better? I guess it depends on the number of recips you have available or if you have a market for bulls.
The sexed semen for brown swiss interest me more then holstein. A decent pedigreed brown swiss heifer is worth about $1000 but a bull is worth only $100. And I would rather struggle feeding a swiss heifer then a swiss bull.

Re: Sexed semen flushing
Many of the cogent bulls are available sexed, which would give you more choice, as is Zade.
