Re: Some "What ifs?"
Quota now back over 3ppl - which with ever more talk of abolition , extra quota being created , and an unfillable gap this year takes a bit of guts!

Re: Some "What ifs?"
Heard of a big new set up going in round here, was a dairy farm until f&m when slaughtered out,the finance company got the farm and have run it as a beef farm since. They apparently bought a million litres a fortnight ago for 1ppl.

MDC now reporting that butter and powder prices in the uSA are now falling , due to unexpectedly high levels of milk production.
Well that didn`t take long did it?

Talk about spending money before you've got it.
Are the cows out there to jump us back up to needing quota for a couple of years?
And with cow prices high and feed prices high, if the quota price goes daft as well will many carry on expanding dairy, or will they grow corn either for home use or to sell.

Re: Some "What ifs?"
Not a hope in hell of hitting quota before it's abolished in my view. Numbers slaughtered for TB have been increasing again, on top of all those getting out or already gone. We produce 25% over our quota & are happy to do that, hell, at 5p, I'd be tempted to cash some more in!
Wheat will have to drop back a bit on this year's crazy levels, in fact I heard yesterday that it's dropped £15/t this week. But forward prices for next year are £130/t, makes more sense than buying average cows at £1,200+, quota at 5p and feed at £200/t.
I've already seen a knock on effect in ram sales this year, with many sheep & arable farmers not buying replacements this year and ploughing more for corn. That was before the F&M depressed the prices further.
I spoke to a friend yesterday that had sold all his downcalving heifers at between £1,400 and £1,600, having increased to 200 cows and thought that was plenty. He wasn't replacing cull sheep (on a 1,700 ewe flock) and was increasing wheat acreage four fold. I don't think he's alone.

Re: Some "What ifs?"
And you can add NVZ regulations to that, if they come in at the level proposed.
Not only are people going to have to spend money on slurry storage, but they are also going to have a limit on what stock a farm can carry. Many are going to have to either reduce numbers or export slurry.

Re: Some "What ifs?"
We actually exported seperated solids from our cow slurry last winter in order to make the figures add up, and have an arrangement to do the same this year.
It is suprisingly difficult to get any arable farmers round here to take it, free for collection. The same guys are always saying that we have it easy with our crops because we have so much muck to use.
I guess when the new regs come in, we'll have to export a lot more.
