Germany's dairy farmers on strike!

A part of the German dairy farmers is on milk strike since yesterday requesting higher milk prices. That means that they refuse to deliver their milk to the dairies/creameries and instead use it for feeding their cows/calves, put it into biogas plants or even put it into the slurry pit.
Participation is very different ranging from about 20% in Lower Saxony to nearly 90% in some regions of Southern Germany, but it is steadily rising. The strike is meant to continue for at least a week. I am still not convinced that it will have any effect, but maybe will start participating tomorrow.
Rumours are spread that the first farmers in Austria, Switzerland, Holland, Luxembourg and France also went on strike. Conversations are allegedly being conducted with the Irish ICMSA.
Is there anyone that has already heard about this or is even planning to participate?

Here around 2,500 members of the DDB have stopped delivering milk and are blocking dairy plants.

I heard about this delivery strike through Farmers For Action and on this website but it is not national news in the UK. I wonder why it is not big enough news over here !

More and more farmers are starting to participate. We'll also stop delivering our milk tonight.

5 minutes ago they told us on the radio that farmers in the EU have had milk prices rises at farmgate of 30 - 60 % and that is why the international markets have softened meaning our own milk price received will drop again.

With inputs riseing every day thats the sort of increase we are looking for!!!
But here in the UK we may have to join our fellow european producers to make processors and retailers take note of our plight.

This was the situation in the winter, but prices only stayed on this level for a short time. Compared to 2006 the average German milk price is higher, but input costs have risen heavily since then.
Some creameries reduced the farmers milk price from 47 Cents to 27 Cents in only 4 or 5 months. Our creamery never payed more than 40 Cents and is now at 30 Cents.
Due to the low US Dollar there is no chance of selling surplus milk on the world market...

I think its amazing. They really have got guts to do something which initially will hurt quite a bit.

Its something that would appear to be catching on, and on a European scale, has the potential to have a big effect.

However, should we in the UK benefit from the knock-on effects, if we haven't been prepared to suffer too?
