Montbeliarde
What would purebred Montbeliarde yield in terms of milk, fat% and protein%? Ballpark average.

Re: Montbeliarde
Was expecting less production and more fat%. Probably rules them out for a project we're looking at.

Not crossbreeding, something far more drastic!!!
We've had a very interesting last 15 months building direct sales of eggs, pork and beef. The mark-up from selling meat direct to the housewife compared to selling a pig or a cow is quite an eye opener. Looking at how we could build something a little different for the future.
Considering something we could milk once a day, with high milk quality, and a decent quality calf to finish for meat either as purebred or beef cross. End product selling as beef and icecream direct to the public.
Idea came from Jimmy Doherty's program with the guy milking south devons for this purpose.
Not sure if the idea runs, but we're not ruling it out.

A neighbour of mine crossed his holsteins with the Montbeliardes and he wasnt a bit happy with them. They were just fat red holsteins, they will not have enough beef either.
Ever hear of Rotbunt DN? I agree with smous but if your do change these are the boys for you.

Re: Montbeliarde
You any experience with rotbunt DN smurf4?
Tried 1 montbeliarde cross once on a cow we didnt want to breed from, resulting bullock killed out as good as any belgian blue cross we had at the time.
I do think a look at rotbunt DN is worthwhile.

Re: Montbeliarde
I saw a couple of Montbeliarde x Holstein maidens this summer. The one thing that I remember about them is that they were completely crazy! Their behaviour was somewhat limousin like (turn your back on them and they jump over gates/walls etc). The pure holsteins they were running with were normal for bulling heifers temperament-wise. Is this a Montbeliarde thing or were the ones I saw extremes?
