Sometime in early October, we had an inspection with the inspector wanting to see the animals passports and other identification records and then the animals themselves. Dad showed him all the passports, the herd register and went outside to show him the animals. Showed him the milkers then went to drive around to check the heifers and dry cows on other ground - inspector said he'd seen all he wanted to see and went home happy. Got a letter around mid december (dated 23/11/08) saying that we might face more inspections in order to validate our payment. Ring up, the guy we need to speak is on Christmas holiday and we'll have to wait until the new year before anything can happen. Got paid on christmas eve which was nice! Dad got a letter today saying our SFP has been validated and should be with us soon. Hope everything gets sorted and you get yours soon, Eyrl!nondisclosed_email@example.com (rossymons)Wed, 14 Jan 2009 12:44:25 +0000 Re: Santa Claus works for the RPA 2008https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p404006,from=rss#post404006https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p404006,from=rss#post404006The RPA still haven't given us a prosperous new year. Supermarkets.. . . .the 12 letter downfall in the agricultural industry! The turkey idea worries me, although the other half is keen. With beef, pork or lamb there are sensible alternatives if we over-do it, and half a cow or a pig or a lamb in our own freezer is far from the end of the world given the amount of meat we eat here. But I don't fancy having to stick 20 turkeys in the freezer. If they don't get sold at prime turkey eating time they might be stuck in there for some considerable time. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Big Bird)Sun, 04 Jan 2009 12:37:11 +0000 Santa Claus works for the RPA 2008https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p403472,from=rss#post403472https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p403472,from=rss#post403472Going into the turkeys may not be a bad route, taking into consideration the price of fresh turkeys this Christmas time. . . once again the supermarkets were offering them at knock down prices though. . . We've been max'd out on both the overdraft and the 'rainy day' account for several months. The SFP will pay off the 'rainy day' and just sneak us under the overdraft limit but probably only for 1 month. At least I haven't had to spend Christmas banging my head against the available sale alternatives. On a more positve note, we haven't got this stretched by simply milking cows. We've expanded the cows slightly, and the chickens, and started direct sales of both pork and beef in the last 6 months. Apparently we're starting lamb in the new year, and possibly doing turkeys for next Christmas. All of which have needed some capital tied up which is where the money has gone. If the meat sales carry on expanding at the current rate we could well have a viable, stand alone business within 18 months which will not need either NVZ storage capacity or dairy investment. That could make for some interesting choices on a small tenanted farm.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Big Bird)Sun, 28 Dec 2008 13:18:01 +0000 Re: Santa Claus works for the RPA 2008https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p403430,from=rss#post403430https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p403430,from=rss#post403430I'm sure those are an absolute nightmare. If the payment was not there then they would have to pay more for the milk or dairy farmers simply could'nt produce it !! How is a young farmer in the UK meant to get on the dairy farming ladder when the market is distorted in this way ! He will need to have a pretty huge wodge of cash to start, and if he has got that kind of money why would he want to milk cows anyway.Come to think about it ! Why did I get out of bed at 4.30am this morning ! p.s. I'm 45, so I dont class myself as a "young farmer"nondisclosed_email@example.com (bauldy)Sat, 27 Dec 2008 10:11:57 +0000 Re: Santa Claus works for the RPA 2008https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p403406,from=rss#post403406https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p403406,from=rss#post403406At 16ppl, we'll be needing ours for more pressing matters, like staying afloat. Oh yes, and eating. With investment in slurry storage already done and dusted in northern ireland this year, the bank has swallowed ours in one quick gulp. I'm already looking forward to next year's. I still see it (and the american subs and tax relief etc) as market distortion, even though our's is 'decoupled' from the market. It is still used to support an unviable milk price. nondisclosed_email@example.com (FiringOnAllFour)Fri, 26 Dec 2008 19:48:13 +0000 Santa Claus works for the RPA 2008https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p403397,from=rss#post403397https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p403397,from=rss#post403397Received notification of ours Saturday 29th November...approximately 30% of its value was written off by the letter received from DFB the day before...nondisclosed_email@example.com (ExpectingRain)Fri, 26 Dec 2008 00:02:08 +0000 Re: …https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p403383,from=rss#post403383https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p403383,from=rss#post403383quote:smous wrote: What is a SFP?
