Re: HEIFERPLUS

I have used sexed semen with great results on maiden heifers and 1st lact heifers after that you need to pick and choose. It's like today had a nice 5th lact Duncan Progress doing 55litres so I used heiferplus as she is very dairy and milking a bit too well for her body condition.

Re: HEIFERPLUS

My heifer grower had an AI tech that was using heifer plus. Looking at data on the internet at the time I found that it didn't seem to be getting advertised results in experiments.

In regards to the 21 out of 29 calvings being heifers: For me that isn't enough data yet to call it a success. I am in the midst of a run of 19 heifers out of 27 first lactation calvings, none bred to sexed semen. I'm sure that when I get out to 50 calvings I'll be somewhere near 30 heifers, not 37 which is the rate I'm going. For heifer plus I'd want to see at least 38 heifers out of 50.

I would agree that it would be really nice to have high heifer percentages and not loose conception rates.

Re: HEIFERPLUS

I agree that it is not a wide enough sample, yet. But it is growing and there will be more relaible UK info all the time.

One of the things that encourages me is that most people who have used it, have ordered some more. Obviously they have seen some benefit, initially in conception rates.

There are definitely drawbacks and restrictions on use, but it is more appealing than the restrictions with sexed semen. Not least the quality of bulls you can use with it.

Re: HEIFERPLUS

The first batch brought into the Uk was around December 2009, and a much larger batch was brough in around May 2010 after the first conception results started filtering through.

The first batch produced the calves born this autumn, the next big wave of calves is due in the next while.

I spoke to a Belgian Blue breeder today who has used Heifer Plus in his last seven flushes and hasn't had single unfertilised egg.

I realise this sort of info is still purely anecdotal, and it will take some time to have widespread results, but the feedback I am getting is generally pretty positive.

I'm gonna try it on a couple flushes next week. One of the cows kicked of 10 unfertilised last time and i'll see if this helps!?

We used it on two advent maiden heifers for a flush, one gave us 3 eggs and the other gave us 16. I will be using it again.
