The lurking is over!
:IR: Hi all, time to introduce myself. Based in an agricultural college in Pallaskenry, Limerick, Ireland, I look after all the bovine stock on the farm(approx 450 dairy and 200 beef). The current dairy herd was set up in 2001 following an out break of brucellosis in the area. We had previously been depopulated in 1999 so 2 depops within 18 mts! When we bought stock in 2001 we selected animals from about 12 herds and invariably bought the milkier heifers, consequently the current herd has a very high pd for milk - 325kgs and the 305 day herd avg for the past 5 years has been over 10,000kgs at 3.69bf & 3.17pr over an avg of 180 cows. Plan to milk 175 this summer with a type breakdown of:
28 EX, 100 VG, 35 GP, 1G, 1F, 10NC yet

Re: The lurking is over!
Thanks lads, well through different circumstances we have put a lot of animals through our hands over a short time. In doing this I think we have had to adjust our mindset to adapt a very steep learning curve. At times different things we tried worked or failed, dry cow diets, herd health, calf rearing. But over time we are getting closer to a management policy which works on our farm, may not work for the farmer next door, but works for us. So if its diets, health or breeding policy that we are talking about, BALANCE is my number 1 word. My 2ps worth!

Re: The lurking is over!
I think I've visited that college. I milk cows in Wisconsin, but I visited Ireland in 2004 and spent an afternoon riding around to some dairy farms with John Geary, your local John Deere dealer. Do you know him?
