Leaving United?

Noticed a wee write-up in Saturday's Farming Life about the number of producers, particularly larger ones, leaving United.

I then heard seperately about two large producers (3m litres a year each) who had handed in their notice (1 year period to be served). Not untill the final day of their notice period did United ATTEMPT to encourage them to stay. A representative from United (apparently Dr D) arrived on each farm. Both now supply someone else.

Over the years we've toyed with the idea, but always opted for 'the devil we know'! With prices where they are an extra penny or two could be the difference between surviving or not.

Anyone else moved lately or considering it?

Another wee news report just on the farming news on Radio Ulster, interviewing the owner of Strathroy Dairy in Omagh. He says he's recieving alot of calls from United producers, some of whom are prepared to pay the penalty to get away from United asap!

Ive heard from differnt sources that strathroy had rang round there producers and told them not to bank there milk cheques until futher notice. so loooks well in black and white when they say they pay more than united.

Glanbia and Town of Monaghan have consistently been paying more than United for a while now, I haven't heard of them having any problems with their cheques!

United paid the highest price for about 6 months last year I don't think at any other period since '95 have they paid higher than the other's I have always been surprised as to how loyal United producers are I worked it out with a neighbour a few years ago we reckoned that a Donegal or Town of Monaghan farmer producing 1 Million liters was more than £100,000 better off since deregulation!
Can't comment on Strathroy but they are paying higher than the others at the moment!

Our Monaghan rep told us a few months back that he had two different men on the phone who had left TMC for Strathroy. Both were trying to get back in with TMC. Dunno why, didnt ask. It wasnt that he was spinning us a line either cos he knew we had no intention of leaving Monaghan. Anyway neither man got back in.

Are you for real? From around Sept til Jan,(when United are normally top) Dobbin never fails to state in the local farming press that they will be paying Xppl to their members. I have yet to read a quote from either Vincent Gilhawley or Hugo Maguire trying to 'rub it in' when monaghan are top.

Dont get me wrong, i couldnt give a toss what dobbin has to say, he needs all the good press he can get, but to say that everyone else gloats when they are top is not true.

Dad and I were chatting last night, did a quick 'head count' of our neighbours and could only get 3 others, apart from us, who are still with United. The larger guys jumped ship long ago!

The list for the area elections posted out recently told its own tale, what was once a 4 or 5 page document now covers one and a half sides of an A4 page!!

The vast majority around here are with united. I'm not sure why that is - perhaps it's geography or perhaps we don't like change?

Re: Leaving United?

My wife was chatting to a customer (whom she knew were dairy farmers) in her shop yesterday and asked who they supplied.

The customer told her that they had left United a year ago after serving 6 months of their notice period, it paid them to take the hit of the penalty and get away ASAP.

A rep from United (not sure who) arrived in their yard the day the notice was up. The rep was politely advised that they'd had 6 months in which to visit and was redirected back down the lane!!!

They're now with Town of Monaghan.
