I think it is a positive move for the remaining members of United, it should be interesting to see how the 'others' price their milk now that they don't have the monthly auction as a benchmark. Locally though, I don't think it bodes so well for our wee co-op in Augher. They are already struggling and this could mark the end for them. It would have been a nice gesture by United to have put an extra 1 or 1.5ppl onto the previous month's price to reflect the rising global market, still time for that to happen yet though, March is still a week away!!!! nondisclosed_email@example.com (will maxwell)Fri, 22 Feb 2013 14:29:51 +0000 Re: Leaving United?https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p429205,from=rss#post429205https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p429205,from=rss#post429205I think the post auction industry will be likely to be a lot more balanced. This probably needed to happen years ago, except that United has had to build herself up to it. I think it could have been done more quickly, obviously with larger borrowings and more risk. That is a youngish head talking, and a board of oldish heads were obviously bound to be much less risk-on. Of course there is much to be said for a strong balance sheet, but any debt is effectively underwritten through the farmers' milk price anyway. We have spent years helping to 'underwrite' other industry prices. Getting here has been very painful, but here we are and we will have to see how this progression turns out. The timing of this could be very good, as we are selling onto a rising market going forward through the spring. It may just be the soft start needed to introduce the new system. One thing that is kinda odd is not being able to look at your phone to see what next month's base is going to be. nondisclosed_email@example.com (FiringOnAllFour)Fri, 22 Feb 2013 00:47:51 +0000 Re: Leaving United?https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p429201,from=rss#post429201https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p429201,from=rss#post429201I think it should be good for members. Dale Farm was able to bid 22.7 at the previous auction for its purchases, despite the average settling at 21.7p. Volume for this auction was 46m down from 56m last month as we slide off the peak. And GB milk would have cost c. 24p delivered of late. Other purchasers at that auction appear to have let the farmer down by sitting back - either they couldn't afford to pay any more for the milk than they did, or they thought it worthy to drag the NI price as low as they could - either of these being very concerning for their own co-op members, I would have thought. nondisclosed_email@example.com (FiringOnAllFour)Thu, 24 May 2012 23:35:53 +0000 Re: Leaving United?https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p424689,from=rss#post424689https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p424689,from=rss#post424689A somewhat surprising auction result today of 21.53ppl, this would need to be ROCK BOTTOM though!nondisclosed_email@example.com (will maxwell)Thu, 24 May 2012 22:47:37 +0000 Re: Leaving United?https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p424630,from=rss#post424630https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p424630,from=rss#post424630Ther's nothing like talking the price down!! As for the short-term premia they offer as an enticement to non-United farmers, I couldn't say. Don't know about your area, but up here is going well off peak now, assisted by the awful conditions. Theres no doubt that currencies are plain scary at the moment. Fonterra dropped again, but that was butter and powder, cheese holding firm. The next auction surely won't be good, but we may see a repeat of last month with dale farm leading with strong bidding (given the real value of commodities). Its worth noting that the cheap English milk has dried up, as many here will be pleased to know. nondisclosed_email@example.com (FiringOnAllFour)Thu, 17 May 2012 17:17:21 +0000 Re: Leaving United?https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p424575,from=rss#post424575https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p424575,from=rss#post424575You must have been at the United stand at the show yesterday FOAF, one of the United men mentioned that 'nugget' in a conversation with me and my father too. There seemed to be some concern over the next auction as well, what with the latest Fonterra result being down ~10%, the pound's relative strength and the local supply still around peak. There have been txt messages floating about warning of a result in the 18-19 pence region, whilst mentioning Fane Valley offering 28 pence to July. nondisclosed_email@example.com (AndooMooMoo)Thu, 17 May 2012 10:05:18 +0000 Re: Leaving United?https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p424563,from=rss#post424563https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p424563,from=rss#post424563Apparently, +70% of members that have left United have ceased milk production. Old guys just keep going. Many have low levels of drawings, relatively low expectations, only very basic farm reinvestment going on and often no borrowings. They don't farm for wealth, and so are surprisingly hard to knock out. The milk price required to bring them to a halt will severely affect you and me. Generally, farms in Northern or Southern Ireland require a stronger market signal to control production than is required in England. And if that is what is needed to kerb this irresponsible target increase, then you can bet we will get it. We need to be in as strong and secure a position as possible when it happens. Ironically, United is likely to be one of the few processors not anticipated to be flooded with extra milk. And we all know processors love nothing more than a plentiful supply of surplus milk that they can price accordingly. nondisclosed_email@example.com (FiringOnAllFour)Sat, 12 May 2012 10:43:03 +0000 Re: Leaving United?https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p424493,from=rss#post424493https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p424493,from=rss#post424493The predicted increase in Southern milk is something that concerns me too, however I'm being told that it will be generally self regulating with alot of older guys ducking out. I'm not so sure about United serving us so well, generally paying less than their competitors and charging more for haulage, testing, ect, ect. nondisclosed_email@example.com (will maxwell)Fri, 11 May 2012 22:38:15 +0000 Re: Leaving United?https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p424481,from=rss#post424481https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p424481,from=rss#post424481Having only just joined this website I found your comments interesting to say the least! United have served our farm very well over the years and are in the strange position of having their milk price set by what other bidders will give at their auction. With reference to Lakeland, they seem to be keen for milk to fill a new dryer but with powder currently only returning 21-22ppL according to this weeks IFJ can they sustain paying more than its worth? Also keen to find out what your thoughts are on the predictions of 50% increase in milk in the South of Ireland after quotas go? Will this disadvantage northern suppliers of southern co-ops?nondisclosed_email@example.com (Balanced Breeding)Fri, 11 May 2012 13:38:44 +0000 Re: Leaving United?https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p424435,from=rss#post424435https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p424435,from=rss#post424435I've only spoken with Lakeland so far, they've been 2p ahead of united on average for a full year now (as printed in the IFJ) dunno what FMT are offering yet. Of those who have left United recently or considered it, does anyone know what happens with ones membership shares upon leaving?? Of course, the difference in fat, protein and quality bases always puts us half a penny behind to begin with. I didn't hear the radio comment (never get a chance!) but I would guess that he was only putting out a bit of positive propaganda. Certain groups like FFA seem to have it in for United. Little do they think what kind of a hole we would all be in if United fell. There has been plenty of bad press put out this year against United, some of it (rather embarrassingly) had to be retracted and apologies printed as a result of unfounded claims. Unfortunately, I couldn't get to the SGM. Fortunately, though, the membership defeated the, perhaps well-intentioned, but ill-conceived resolution by more than twenty to one. nondisclosed_email@example.com (FiringOnAllFour)Sat, 26 Sep 2009 22:18:25 +0000 Re: Leaving United?https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p409919,from=rss#post409919https://bcowtalk.runboard.com/p409919,from=rss#post409919I don't remember getting a text message to that effect.
