AI Gun Warmer

After less than stellar breeding results this winter I had thought about purchasing one of these. Anyone currently using one or have any opinions on them? I believe they cost around $350 in the US so they are not cheap.

Get some of those gel packs that can be heated or frozen. Walmart has them. Warm them up with a 5 minute soak in hot water, put them in an appropriately sized insulated cooler, and add semen guns in rotation. I saw a set up like this at a local farm with 700 head. Unless you are breeding cows all day, it will be more than sufficient.

I use some paper towel to warm them up and put it down the back of my overalls before I thaw the semen. Works fine.

(You might already be doing this but thought it was worth saying - could save you $350)

What would you suggest when there are 25 to 30 cows to breed in one go Rossymons or a 100 to 200 synchronised heifers?

I've got a gun warmer.

I like it a lot except when it gets extremely cold, then the battery won't hold any charge.

Didn't really notice any difference in conception before and after I started using it.

I leave it down my back. If it's warm to my cheek before I take the straw out, its fine. If its cold, I use another piece of paper and warm it up again.

Have used one for several years, worth the money. Keeps everything toasty and multiple guns organized. The new style battery's are much better then the old style, they last a lot longer. When I first used it thought it was awkward and a waste but after you get use to it you will never go back, also works good to incubate if you are using HeiferPlus

We will be doing trials in the next while with heifer plus added to the semen pre-freezing. I will let people know how it goes.

Our vet says it isn't that great. I believe Heifer Plus requires 20 minutes to work, is that correct? 20 minutes of the semen with the enzyme or whatever? Well the semen is supposed to be in the cow in 15 minutes isn't it?
