Re: 400,000 SCC limit in US

The government had those limits, not individual milk coops, or buyers. Those limits are set by the market.

We aren't talking premium price at under 250,000 we are talking not in violation. Big difference.

I thought it was EU related.....
ie.the EU has stated it will not allow imports originating from milk produced from herds with over 400,000cc and suppliers of dairy products must be able to have a paper trail leading back to original herd which must be tested and documented.

We are talking two different things. Nationwide this is correct.

My local market is possibly going to the 250,000 limit.

Are we really going to go to 400,000 Nationwide limit? Or will co-ops just enforce it on their members that have export licenses? Just a question.

Thanks for any input!

DFA Field Rep stopped in yesterday. I asked him about this 250,000 SCC rumor. He said that it was the reason he stopped. This new standard will be in place by September 1, 2010. So essentially six weeks away. He thinks that all over the midwest, west, and eastern areas that this will quickly become the standard. They still don't have a plan for penalties and violations yet though. It is going to come quickly though. The retail sector will drive this, because of advertising. My fieldman thinks this will go nationwide quickly.

Can you guess at how much milk comes in above 400,000?

I'm just surprised that you see it as a big deal.

The 250, on the other hand, I think is probably going to run some people tight. Our average in Northern Ireland is somewhere in the 220-240 range.

You've heard me say this before, but our co-op premium is for under 100,000.

The southern US with it's heat and humidity will have problems making the 400,000 cut off. Our co-op always paid premiums at 300,000 but those were so small that there are farms that really didn't pay attention to cell count. Those farms are paying attention now.

Re: 400,000 SCC limit in US (250,000 coming)

Wow, if a 250 limit comes into place, all hell might break lose. I really think that too - because I wanted the 750 legal limit to be stepped down from 750 to 600, then to 500, then to 400, over a year's period so other's could adjust - and I was reamed out because people thought that 750 shouldn't be lowered at all. So this could be interesting. I bet 25% of the US milk supply if not more is over 250, if not over 3-400 SCC range. Our co-op hasn't said a word yet, they recently sent out a newsletter that had a small paragraph about examining SCC limits - but I got the feeling that at most they'd do is drop the limit to 400, if much of anything at all. Seems to me that the EU isn't too worried about the 400 limit as they keep pushing the US deadline back.

I think that the 400,000 SCC ain't all that bad of an idea. It isn't to terrible hard to stay under 400,000 if you practice good hygiene for your cows. But that is just my opinion.

surprisingly we have just come thru the wettest winter since 1996 averaging around the 100,000.we also only had 4 cases of sore feet despite laneways buried in almost a foot of mud.
we upped the concentration of our teatdip - ecolab blueguard from 25% to 30% and only washed the really wet udders - the dried mud we just brushed/peeled off before putting cups on.
oh and milk was the highest/per head it has ever been.
