Hurricane Irene
Category 1 Hurricane working its way up the east coast and headed my way this weekend. Expecting 4-6+ inches of rain in about less then 24 hours. Winds 40-70mph as well. Spent much of the afternoon getting the generator hooked up in case power goes out, getting a few older dry cows out of the pasture and into the shelter of the barn.
Suppose to cause a lot of havoc in major cities like New York and Boston with waves likely to flood parts of the city.
As a farmer I would say there is a pretty big concern for poer outages and the corn crops out in the fields. Hopefully they dont get flooded along river banks or flattened by wind gusts. The BMR corn will have a good standibility test this weekend. If there are any other cowtalk members in the path of this storm. Good luck and God bless!

Re: Hurricane Irene
Well we survived the storm. In twelve hours almost 5 inches of rain fell near our farm and more in other parts of New England. Most of the major damage around here came when rivers overflowed and washed out roads, bridges, trees, power poles, and even houses. Fortunately the power only went out at the farm for a few hours and the only thing that flooded was a calf barn with about 8 inches of water and the barn gutters.
The good thing about a rain storm is most the water is able drain away. Unlike a couple of snowstorms we had the past year in which you spend the next couple days trying to dig out.
