Re: Antibiotic Milk for calves!!!!

Buckeye, like I said Whole waste milk will out perform 20/20. as far as the excelerated feeding program of 28/20, 28/15 I think they have a good thing going the deal is with one of those programs you are puting up to 2 1/2 lbs of powder per day. You push them realy hard I have used it some calves do realy well and others can't handle it. I have had some crash at weaning. I have raised calves on whole milk and they don't have quite the gain early but they start on starter sooner and transition better. My vet told me you could increase the amount of whole milk to equal the total dry mater intake of the 28/20 and they would do as good at 1/2 the cost. Its all about how much total solids and dry mater the calf takes in. the if both are equal I think the calf will do better on whole milk.

Re: Antibiotic Milk for calves!!!!

I don't know about you guys but, i live in a reasonably warm and tropical climate.(most of the year round at least) Queensland is a Jhones free state with the exception of quarantined herds. we have a very low mortality rate feeding our calves the way we do and have been doing for many years now! with the extra colostrum from a few fresh cows at times, some of the smaller calves get sick. but fix up with a bit of scourban!

as for other diseases, we don't have a problem with that! or at least it doesn't affect the performance of any of our cattle.

most of the university, or lab studies are performed in places like new Zealand, ireland, UK, USA, Canada. most of those places are alot wetter and colder than here.

The origional question was basicaly to get your thoughts about feeding antibiotic milk, and why some people say you shouldn't.

you have all answered my question, and it now seems that you are trying to convert others feeding plans.

as for the studies and uni tests, ill look them up and keep them for reference,

we have 24 heifers, all 14 months old, when they were calves most didn't come down from the calving paddock for 48 hrs,and then they were left with the mother for a week. they all have been fed on blue milk as calves, no problems with them. 2 weeks time the bull is goin with them, all past target joining weight and have been cycling for about 4 months now. so personally i don't see the problem with my feeding plan!

blue milk, fresh whole milk, powder milk, who gives as long as your system works for you and there are no problems with the animals! i don't like the way we all have to be right about what we are disscussing!

thankyou for your suggestions all. if i have problems i may use some of your advice.

ur milkin mate in oz

ps. these animals and plans stated are from a reletives farm which im involved in.

I remember when using sour colostrum was recomened as the way to feed calves. You could have papered your wall with the articles in dairy magazines on how to do it and how successful it was. Properly done it is still a good way to feed calves, but requires the utmost care.

Colostrum is very nutritious and good for any calf. It has among other extra nutriments 17% protein. According to an ag study in Canada, it should be fed as a mixture of 1 part water to 3 parts colustrum, feeding this mixture at a rate of 3 to 4 pounds twice a day.

In a Missouri University Ag department release on calf feeding, mastitic milk could be used for feeding calves with safey, if the calves were separated and not allowed to suck one another.

What ever works sucessfully for you, seems to be the way to go. "Nothing suceeds like success." anomymous.

Joe,
I don't think we went way off or try to change someones point on feeding calves. Whats nice about this forum you have so many Dairymen from so many parts of the world each with advise on what works for them. Opinions just like assholes everyone has one!
I have my own way of doing things that works for me as you do! But you did ask for it!!! And it seems every topic goes a little stray. But the whole reason were here is for fun. To learn, And to Bash someone when the chance opens up emoticon

Has anyone seen results from feeding Excelerated feeding programs compared to Whole milk? I have seen them compared to 20/20.

Never fed treated milk to calves, as was always told it caused antibiotic resistance resistance for the calf. Does pasturization also kill the antibiotic? or just the germs the antibiotic is suposed kill? The whole issue of antibiotic resistance, is leaking into the medias main stream is it not. It is becomeimg a serious concern, in this part of the world for sure. As for the excelerated calf feeding programs, I think they are great, IF you have someone whos key job is looking after such a program. When the only employee is yourself, it is way to much bother.

Would only feed milk or milk replacer.Would not use milk that is not fresh, mastatic milk, and antibiotics. If they are in the wild
they should only get warm fresh milk.If the milk i feed to my calves is not good enough for me to drink why should i give it to them.

In the wild they also die if they cannot drop their young unaided, there are no high pins and the sub fertile lines become extinct.
