Last Week of Quota Year
It's still too close to call, production increased last week, pushing us close to the edge, if it drops enough this week we probably won't hit quota! SO, the question is what to do, even if 50% of producers were to pull the bung one day this week, I reckon we'd be OK, of course if individuals who have got quota (bought or leased) decided to keep it up, then it'll go over.
We did get some quota, but need a wee bit more to leave us safe. We've deliberately left it to the last week of trading before making a final decision, calves are still getting whole milk, low producing cows are being dried off early.
Infact that could make the difference, everyone dries off that 3 or 4% of cows which are low producing, it might make the difference!!
Have a think about your milk production this week, cna you store milk for a day extra at the end of the month? Ask the tanker driver to delay lifting it, as far as I know milk can stay 3 days in the tank OK. 2
Remember the ONLY winners in the quota market are the brokers!!

Re: Last Week of Quota Year
14ppl this morning to lease out.Expect the country to hit quota but not trigger the butterfat adjustment.
Guessing on a safe threshold for DFOB of around 2%.Have put quota on market at 8.50am has already gone at 14p !!!

Re: Last Week of Quota Year
Is anyone going to hold back their last day or two's milk to be collected on 1st April? Could make all the difference! 2

Re: Last Week of Quota Year
can you manipulate quota by seperating milk and only shipping cream?

Re: Last Week of Quota Year
Would be tricky without fancy equipment, besides, that would boost the base butterfat figure, trigering the butterfat adjustment (which looks like it won't come into play)
The easiest thing to do is keep back the milk form 31st March (if you've got the storage space) and send it on the 1st April so it's counted into next years production
We've got enough quota leased in to keep us safe, but we're still holding next Wednesday's milk and still feeding calves whole milk, infact they'll still be getting whole milk after Wednesday 31st, cos they're on it so long. We'll be starting to wean them after 1st April, Mum's not looking forward to that with the November/December born calves!!
I hope everyone affected by quota is safe, here's hoping we don't go over on Wednesday!!

Right about the base adjustment, but no fancy equipment needed.
Just turn off tank agitator, leave to settle out and open tank drain valve to release required amount. Because the cream goes to the top what you draw out the bottom is very dilute, and you increase the fat % of what is left in the tank.

Re: Last Week of Quota Year
HMM, would be worth a try if we thought the butterfat adjustment was going to be triggered. I suppose we'll know more by the end of this week, by which time it will all be too late!!
We sold off (gave away!) seven bull calves on Sturday, wise decision or not! So we're hoping today and tomorrow won't tip the balance!
