Re: tiestall remodeling
I just thought about this thread while doing chores today. Have had sand in the tiestall about a year now and love it. I did not change the stalls at all, just attatched the 3 inch pvc at the rear of the stall. I used some specially made plastic clamps to go around the pipe so I was able to center the pipe on the rear stall edge.
Im glad that I didn't dive in to busting out concrete right away. The cows get up so much better with the sand, even better than just having mats like before. The pvc pipe does catch more manure and pee into the stall, so for the time being im glad I didn't lengthen the stalls. Trainers are adjusted more frequently now!
Hock injuries have basically vanished and a stepped on teat extremely rare. I'm sure a couple of my oldest cows in the barn wouldn't be there without sand. All in all I'm glad I did it.

Re: tiestall remodeling
I can tell there is some extra ware on the cement bottom, but is nothing drastic yet, actually less wear than I was guessing there would be. Our chain was fairly new so can't really say I notice any excessive wear on it.
