Where did it go wrong? I thought initially the yields, adjusted for solids were ahead of the Holsteins.

They were but the Holstein breed improved rapidly due to the use of Oman and his sons. The Holstein breed had its head up its own arse when I started using other breeds

I found a very similar thing. Oman and sons as well as other health trait lines in the Holstein breed do a better job on the health traits and have better type and production than the crossbreeds.

I agree with Bazza. I can say unequivocally there is no longer any use of Scandinavian Reds or Montbeliarde locally. Jersey is the only breed that still has traction in local crossbreeding programs. Temperament and poor supply kiboshed the Reds. Montbeliardes were just too big and inconsistent, I will grant that cows with about a quarter or eighth Monty left in their DNA are performing well, perhaps it is because they are ¾ or 7/8 Holstein.
We have made massive strides cow fertility wise in the last decade, far faster than any of the boffins would have us believe. Using only calving ease bulls for nearly fifteen years now and been religious about health traits has made pure breeding both possible and highly profitable in seasonally calved herds. We have generations of positive PL and DPR bulls going back to Cal-Denier Belltone Buttons and Bis-May SEL Mountain the first bulls I ever sold nearly twenty years ago. Manfred sons and grandsons (most especially Oman and his sons) saved the Holstein breed commercially.

Got too add there have been some dissapointments along the way, but fortunately far outweighed by the bulls that held their figures.

Only regret I have is not going all in with crossbreeding right away. Even with saturating the herd with Manfred blood (we used Manfred himself, Potter, O Man, etc..), the crosses still outlast and even outproduce the pure Holsteins on solids. The health trait bloodlines were good for getting Holsteins to last 3-4 lactations instead of 1-2 but it's going to be the crosses that last 5+

O Brolin was probably the best thing to happen to my herd.

Smous,I find your comments on Montbeliarde x Holsteins interesting. My Monty crosses are also performing very well ,certainly more profitable and less hassle than my pure Holsteins. Not unexpected though after reading the university crossbred trials data.

Seems to be a lot more vocal crossbreeding presence online than in real life. Managed to talk to some AI techs out here from the states and they said in their area crossbreeding started to pick up but now all switched back to holsteins apart from a few that are going to pure jersey. None staying with reds or Montys.

Same thing happening locally.

In my opinion there is a pretty solid reason why holsteins are the most podular breed and with the size of it the other breeds can't keep up as we are seeing with breeding for health traits. The top end holstein bulls for DPR are steamrolling past the crossbreeds and it took what only what 5-10 years for it to happen.
