I missed this when you posted it.

Of course this was the first thing I was going to ask my Taurus Rep when he stops next emoticon

So I'll ask this right here... Which Aussie Red bull should be the first one into my tank?

None. The viking reds are better.

The viking reds beat the aussie reds on our index over here anyway.

Come on now. You know how I operate.

Looks like BonJovi is pretty close in APR to the Norwegian bull Eik, a bull which I recently put into my tank. There's no harm in trying some. I remembered being told that the Norwegian Red won't compete with the Swedish Reds too.

edited to add: Also note we are dealing with import restrictions from Europe in the US. Aussie Red gives me more options.

I would say norwedgen reds are a much better option.

Aussie bulls are terribly unreliable. The top bulls may look good now and hold for a proof run or two then crash down the index.

Our data collection for health traits is totally inferior to the Scandinavian countries. Our index is still mosty production dominant.

I live here and I wouldn't touch the aussie reds when there are much better options avaliable but I know you are not afraid of trying something different.

My thoughts as well. They may very well not be as great as the Swedish Reds but now us Americans have some leverage in semen prices and availability.

I also heard through the grapevine that Taurus may drop LIC because of being screwed over on prices. LIC is selling semen in their US markets to producers cheaper than what Taurus is paying them.

Sorry guys, been away from forum watching for a few days :P

It can be said that the overseas bulls bounce up and down our indexes as much as the locals. I can pull data up for a few years and do a rank compare if you really want Bazza.

Don't forget the red breeds are all in one base. Illawarra, Ayrshire, swedish reds, norwegian reds and I think the normandes as well.

As for Jonnys question,

I would go for Bobdown over crossies especially for a bit of stature on Jerseys and for pulling in wonky teats.

Bonjovi is my other favourite, he has got a better balanced proof and his Dam only just died this year, at 15.

I love this cow, she moved with the Bosgowan herd into a 800+ cow herd about 5 years ago and just kept going.

At 14

At 15, only a week or two before she finally gave in.

Its probably not the most scientific of conclusions but Bonjovi has a pretty solid cow family behind him.

Just for some eye candy, this is the herd she was competing in:

I'm going on bulls I have used and apart from donor the aussie bulls have been very ordinary. We used plenty of aussie bulls the high index at the time and by the time they were milking the index had flopped.

Bullbar, called Australias health trait specialist has done poor here. Most are leaving very young. I used Orana. Terrible. Not picking on gen Aus either the others haven't done any better.

Off topic for just a min but what % of the aussie proof is related to fertility/health? seems odd to have such a high weighing on production when you can graze 365days
