acetonaemia


Got a huge problem with acetonaemia in our new calved cows...Nutritionalist says the ration is 'OK' do I shoot the guy and get a new one or just alter i.e up the energy..in the pre-calvers....help needed guys Cheers Lee

2nd cut grass silage...2kg biscuit meal...1 kg...soya meal...1/2 kilo molasses + draft (Brewers grains) 1 kilo...Pre calvers and roughly doubled new calvers....

Because I am the guy that has to put up with all the shite....I am the head herdsman, but the boss 'sorts' the ration, had the vet out today for 2 nervous acetonaemia's in cows 1week calved and 10 days calved....Lee

I would hold the soy meal untill they calf and I would also skip the molasses unless it's in a TMR since molasses just makes life hard for the all important fiber digesting bacteria.
So grain pre calving and soy meal post calving.
Another cause for this problem is fat cows, they often get into trouble after calving regardless of what ration they're on.

Try this Cowsmart
chopped straw!!
1-2kg per dry cow and as broa suggests cut back the soya to your pre calvers to 0.25kg and leave the rest as it is( this should increase dmi and energy levels post calving)!! feed pre calvers on this ration for the 3 weeks up to calving!! some straw to the milkers might do no harm either, depends how the fresh calvers are dunging!!

cheers guys, I have been trying to get him to feed chopped straw for 2 years, he says its too expensive??? Over the winter had no milk fever with the cows bedded on straw...turn out and every cow over 2 lactations down with fever.....never mind...also EVERY cow gets acetonaemia....hard work at the moment, Regards Lee
