posticon Bull ring

We have a 16 month old bull that is due to go to a sale at the end of the month ,does anyone know the regulations regarding rings in breeding bulls noses?

If he has to have one in is it getting a bit late to do it?

Not sure on the regulations but it is always easier to control a bull with a ring!. A month should be plenty time if all goes well but you never know. Should be a fair sized bull so make sure the ring is big enough for his nose. emoticon

We've bought two bulls 'unringed' one Holstein and one AA. The AA breeder was reluctant to let the bull go without a ring, but didn't have one of the correct size.
I'm sure if you thorw the purchaser a good enough luck-penny, he'll not mind!

As far as I know (and I might be wrong) there's nothing in law to make you do it.

I don't know if you have to do it or not, but for safety reasons I would recommend it.

While we're on the subject, is there any truth in the rumour that you should get a stranger to ring a bull, and not be around when it's done, as the bull will REMEMBER?!! emoticon
I was there when the vet ringed the Holstein, Dad was there when the AA was done (also by the vet) Both bulls were doped at the time and didn't seem to feel a thing! emoticon

A bull can be just like cows, some cows are brighter than others, and remember people. We have a cow that had a particularly rough calving and ever since has been terrified of one of our vets. He is tall and has distinctive features. She doesn't want any part of him.

Dad used to have an employee in the 80's that didn't have much cow sense, and whenever he was around the cows went nuts. Even if he just came in the parlor to chat, the ears went up and so did the tails.

I would have a vet put the ring in just to be safe. More so because of his age and get him anesthisized correctly.

Ringed a 17 month bull very recently.

Just make sure he is tied tight, and tied again for safety. I don't start until he can't move more than an inch.

I reckon you still are in good time. If it still is tender at the sale, he will be easier to handle.

Don't you just hate people calling into the parlour to see you about something in the middle of milking. I usually threaten them with the volume hose. emoticon
