Monument Impression

This is an interesting proven bull that I haven't heard a lot about. His type proof has no holes, he's an outcross (Socrates*Potter), production is decent, his health traits are strong AND he's a Repromax/Healthsmart/Robot Ready and Immunity+ sire.

Is there something I'm missing? Does anyone have any first hand information on him?

I'm going to add some to the tank.

US proof

Canadian proof

I have been watching this bull for around 1 year I think I mentioned this bull in the new bulls thread I always thought he was great prospect. What I like about him is that he has different breeding and his 3rd dam is a full sister to Jasper.

His proof looks very balanced and he has some strength u would think he is a great bull for Goldwyn blood.

Obviously, no bull is perfect... I prefer my bulls to have rear teat placement below +1.0. He is only slightly above that at +1.01, but for robots I really prefer it below 1 (at that level though I would give him a pass). However, since I am a big health traits kind of guy his DPR is below my cutoff. I won't use anything below +0.3. Furthermore, with a CE of 8.1% and a stillbirth rate of 8.1% you can see that not only does he have difficult births but that those births lead to dead calves... which is even worse for the cow than it would be otherwise. Are those terrible numbers... no, but again, I prefer mine lower.

I do like how his SCS number is low (evidence of his immunity plus working) and he does have great conception.

I have been using him since April proofs came out. Really liked his outcross pedigree. Semen fertility has been very good. He even managed to get a few cows pregnant for me in early July when the temperature was around 110 degrees. A friend of mind that works for Semex's Premier program had seen a bunch of first crop daughters out west and was really signing his praises based on the daughters she had seen.

Using this bull the last week as I just got semen. With his really good udders and no holes type and semen fertility, it would be easy to use him a lot. It is early days for Robust, but together with Impression, one could argue Socrates has a way better hit rate than some really heavily used sire of sons. We milked only one Socrates, and she was low-key silky, and quite wet, from a VG Dundee, 83pt Skyfame, then an Aeroline. Impression could get really heavy use for a while.

I don't wish to derail my own thread, but out of curiousity, what bulls are you using that fit your criteria, drdiederich?

Some examples of sires I am currently using include 1HO10817 (James), 1HO10296 (Boyoboy), 1HO10422 (Dempsey) and 1HO10218 (Denim)... all genomic bulls from Genex. They all have their drawbacks. James is a little wider than I like for rear teats but is close enough I give it a pass. Denim has a higher stillbirth rate than I like and a weak cleft but his DPR and DCE rates are fantastic along with the other health traits. Dempsey has a higher SCS but it is still below 2.9 and I certainly don't approve of his %P or protein yield numbers. Boyoboy has short teats and a higher stillbirth rate. They all make good udders that should perform well in the robots. Maybe the other type scores aren't what others are looking for but I don't look all that much at anything other than udder, feet and health/calving data.

I used Impression as a young sire and have one daughter. She is pictured on the semex site, Candy-crest impression Vicky. She is my favorite 2year old in the barn and I am using him again.

Re: Monument Impression

I would want to use Socrates sons on cows with great udders even if the bull has good udder traits.I think the cross of Blitz x Prelude was a terrible mating that has focused two bulls together that have maybe to much Valiant/Glendell.

Prelude's did not have the best fore udders and his mother was a Glendell so I don't think Prelude was a great bull to bring more Glendell to Emory having Rotate a Glendell son behind. The best cross for a Prelude would of been Allen who has way better udders on his proof than Blitz a far better cross for bringing Glendell together.

One bull that I am watching is a bull with a great name(I wonder what he is named after!)he is called Coyne-Farms Socrate Dawg Dorcy's brother.Another one is Sacramento from GGI who is a Socrates x Shottle x Durham x Patron x Leadman x Mark Dellia.

Impression looks like he could work with lots of different blood that for me is a great sign of a great sire.I would want to use him with Goldwyn blood and the only two Impression daughters from Goldwyn dams are very badly scored but they did not come from much.

I think the worst thing u could do with this bull is double up Prelude or maybe Emory I would not want to use this bull on a Goldsun/Demsey daughter for example although Samuelo seems to have worked ok with this bull. The bull has made 37 good daughters to only 4 VG so I don't know if I could call this bull a type sire more like a balanced semi outcross bull.

I would want to look at using Superstition sons on Impression daughters in the future for a great balance something like Ammon-Peachey Mitch.
