New Plan for Scottish Dairy Industry

Anyone else a bit uneasy at the thought of a 50% rise in production , albeit over 12 years?

I won`t be in the industry long before then, and my maths don`t stretch to calculating the compound rate of increase required but I would have guessed around three % year on year.

Given a drop out rate of probably at least 1 per cent that would take some doing.
The retailers will think it`s their Christmas every day with that sort of flush supply.

I hadn't heard of this. Sounds like they are trying to mimic the ROI plan. Difference is that there is a certain amount (no one can really say how much) pent up energy for expansion in ROI due to real quota restrictions. I can't see how any of that is present in Scotland. For sure, Scotland is probably very understocked for it's total acres. Perhaps its part of some kind of vision for 'Independence'? Its easier to see how it could be done when prices are at all-time highs, but it will look a lot different in two years time.

I would have thought with the generous grant aid to farmers in Scotland and land available ,they could be quite able to achieve this. Many other countries in Europe have ambitions to expand [sign in to see URL] IS THE MARKET FOR THIS [sign in to see URL] 18 months ago about 4% more milk than we have presently caused a price [sign in to see URL] we get expansion at even a faction of these targets, processors will have to invest huge amounts in stainless steel ,which will lie redundant when the milk price will collapse and farmers go bankrupt .Hopefully wisdom will return before we follow the lemmings over the cliff

3.5% compound rise gives 51% increase in 12 years.

Some areas of Scotland can produce milk efficiently from extended grazing season, and production is rising markedly in these areas.

In other areas milk is required near the processing dairies, and if a premium is offered milk can be produced on a largish scale with high input systems.

I don`t really see Scotland being competitive widely across the industry in our conditions , such as to challenge for world markets.

Apparantly if we keep producing the extra milk , then businesses will storm across the border and build plants to process it - so says NFUS.

Count me out.

Good job Scotland voted against independance then Gavin!! If you all had decided to go it alone then you would have had all this extra milk to deal with all by yourselves, the border would have been shut! emoticon
