Re:
I'm still smiling about how cute that calf is. I know it's early but what do you think you will breed it to?

Re:
I'll probably go with a Nordic Red when she is a heifer.
Or maybe if I go Jersey I could recreate the Brown Swiss without having any Brown Swiss involved?

Re:
Now you are talking. Brown Swiss without the stubbornness. Have you noticed a decrease in your 1st lactation ME since beginning crossing? Often you mention things like they are slower to get going or mature later is this coming through in lower 1st lactation yields?

Re:
To a degree, yes. Though, I think the energy corrected 305ME underestimates the lower producing first lactation cows. The 18-20,000 lb first lactation cows (~300 days) I've found see significant gains by third lactation where they can even approach 30,000 lbs. And usually they are also the ones that run a 5.4% fat and 3.6% protein so while volume wise they are fairly mediocre in first lactation even when considering components, the added volume in 2nd, and especially 3rd lactation makes them quite valuable.

Re:
If its similar to our PI (production index) calculation that you can compare cows across lactation it overvalues production early in lactation. Therefore can tend to penalize cows that have flatter lactation curves.

Re:
How's the little lady doing? Growing well and getting along with the other heifers?
I'm still looking for a free moment when I'm down in your neck of the woods to stop by and check her out

With our calf shed not done, she's handled some pretty rough conditions. She seems to be doing well, I'll hopefully be sending her off to the heifer grower soon.
