Greetings from (currently not so) Sunny So Cal

Hello everyone!

I made an account awhile back, but I've only been soaking up info so far. I felt like it was time to finally introduce myself. My name is Sam and I've got an 8 month old Holstein heifer named Harley. I'm a home dairy enthusiast, I guess you'd say. Harley is my only cow; she was my "bonus" from my boss last summer - he got her from a local commercial dairy as a day-old calf. I hadn't had a calf since high school and my FFA days, and those were all steers sold at fair or eaten by about 6-9 months. Harley is the first calf I intend to raise and milk in perpetuity. I've been an equine professional my entire adult life, and I'm amazed at just how different cows are from horses - it's astonishing! :blinker But I'm having a ball with my little girl and I'm very much enjoying all the new learning opportunities she's presented so far.

I really look forward to getting to "meet" everyone and learning a lot more from this forum.

Welcome. Just be forewarned, breeding cows is addictive. Once you have one, you'll want more!

Does your calf have a pedigree?

So true! I'm already considering trying to pick up another nice cow or calf when I show at the county fair this year.

No pedigree yet, she came with no info, just a birth date. I'm currently working with the Holstein association to get a DNA test done to determine if it's possible to identify her sire and dam.

This is my girl. I'd welcome thoughts or comments. I'm still learning what to look for conformation-wise, and I'd appreciate understanding more about her structural strengths and weaknesses.
