Usually coloured legs in cattle is a simple dominant gene, although there are cases of what I think is called distal spotting where there can be the odd small spot around the ankles, without brown legs.I had an Ayrshire bull from brown legged parents who was totally brown in colour and never left a white legged calf( 70 daughters registered!), thus I assume he was homozygous for brown legs.Pant Riviera was a similar case.He never left a white legged daughter , both his parents being brownlegged( Pant Priceless and Pant Nova) although each parent had a white legged parent in turn ( Pant Knighthood and Snowshill Nova)
Equally I had a white legged bull born from brown legged parents , meaning that he was homozygous for white legs from heterozygous parents. It can be quite fun to trace the persistance of a single dominant gene through the ages.

For example take the brownlegged Ayrshire bull Celandine First Lord.( by White legged Bankend Lord Ontario and born in the early 1990s)

The brown legs came from his dam-
Changue Celandine 21st, her dam was white legged-she got them from her sire
Changue Headmaster, he got them from his Sire Pant Domino ( by white legged P Scottish Welcome),Domino got them from his dam Pant Rosina. Her dam Pant Libby was very white but Rosina was very brown and spotty by Pant News Flash who was a Pant Dictator son ( very brown!)

Pant Dictator got them from his Dam , Pant Lilac who received them from Kirkton Just Right, her sire .

The source here was Just Right`s mother Bargower Silver Bell the 12th.

She got them from her sire Rigfoot Paymaster, but we are talking about an Ayrshire heifer who won at the London Dairy Show in about 1923 - subsequently lost a quarter and by dogged persistance was bought by the late Jimmy Rennie to take to Kirkton ( he later moved to Pant)

Celandine First Lord M
Changue Celandine 21st F
Changue Headmaster M
Pant Domino M
Pant Rosina F
Pant News Flash M
Pant Dictator M
Pant Lilac F
Kirkton Just Right M
Bargower Silver Bell 12th F
Rigfoot Paymaster M

11 generations and I have great grand daughters of First Lord that are brown legged so thats 14 generations traceable of the gene.

Photos of most of these animals are available as proof!

Re: What breed is she from?

these cows look identical to a cow family that I have. I call them crazy legs. mine trace back 8 generations to shorthorn. This trait seems to be transmitted about 50% of the time. I am currently trying to breed mine to red and white holsteins because the cows are 97% rha and a dominant cow family in my herd and the classifier refuses to score them because of their markings of impurity. They are great cows with a little extra strength and condition than my regular holsteins.
