Bulls that breed big appetites into their daughters.
One of my favorite traits in a cow, is a big, aggressive appetite. I finds it can help a cow through any health problem, and makes a lot of milk. Which bulls in your herd make cows that don't stop eating?

Re:
Big appetite doesn't really worry me. Infact its a negative if they don't milk and can't get pregnant.
Give me cows that produce a lot of milk, don't get sick and get pregnant and cows that do that without eating as much are better anyway.

Re: Bulls that breed big appetites into their daughters.
I believe appetite is good thing, especially with robots! The cows that actually beat others out of the way to get milked or to get at the feed bunk are the ones that milk the best and last the longes.
I think you can overdo milking temperament. Our ahottles were to calm and easy going. The attitude of " if I don't get milked today, there's another day tomorrow" shottle is one of the best for temperament on paper. Our most aggressive cow is a pronto x Goldwyn ( yes Goldwyn's have bad temper, maybe a good thing if you're not connecting milkers?)

But what your talking about isn't really appetite. You say you want production and longevity as well as cows that come to be milked. Well I would happily have that from a cow that eats less. Feed costs money.
I've read before that temperament is negatively correlated with longevity. I never really look at temperament. How the animals are raised has a much bigger impact.

Both of our Shottles on the robot are like that. Friendly to the point of being annoying, eat like pigs but lollygag around the robot and never get to 3 times/day.

Re: Bulls that breed big appetites into their daughters.
So maybe Shottle transmits it through Twist?!
I only have experience of him through 2 heifer calves, but they ate and drank at double the rate of their pen-mates!
In my opinion it's a useful trait as the animal which is an aggressive eater will take in more kg of dry-matter at the feed fence in a quicker time, go and lie down sooner, spend more time ruminating therefore potentially producing more milk than their timid herd-mates.
--- Please Sir, I want some more, cos as we all know 'every little helps'!

Re:
All things being equal you want a cow that eats less. Unless I am the only one who pays for feed here.
