Managing Milk Price
Hi All-
I was wondering if anyone is doing any forward contracting or margin protections. I believe we (in the US) are about to experience a big pop in the milk market. Once fall demand moves through, there will be little reason to keep milk prices at current levels.
Exports are headed to zero because of current prices.
Any thoughts?

Re: Managing Milk Price
With the new margin protection program I will not be forward contracting, just using the margin program. Looks like a very good tool for USA farmers, especially if under 4 million pounds a year with the reduced premiums.

Re: Managing Milk Price
we actually signed a 3 year contract with our milk company with a guaranteed MINIMUM price on a cents/litre basis so that at least we have some idea where we are going

Re: Managing Milk Price
So it would appear that there are eejits (fools) in your country as well as here, pumping out MORE milk in a time of falling prices!! When will we begin to grasp the concept of supply and demand??

Re: Managing Milk Price
We are as guilty as anyone. We normally milk around 120-125, we have run at 132 really all year.
Beef price has kept the market somewhat in check and we had record prices. Let's see how this shakes out. I suspect that the beef market will absorb a lot of the price drop.

Re:
What bout California? Feed supplies are limited and milk prices dropping in a drought. I can't see them holding onto cows.

Re:
Milk factories here still telling us they want more and more milk. Infact offering bonuses for those that can increase production.
