Semex Healthsmart and Immunity+

Thinking of using these two types of breeding bulls as away to improve the health of the commercial holstein herd I've recently started working on.

Just wanted to hear how people viewed these products now that there will be daughters on the ground.

Is there any benefit to using them that you've noticed?

I was at a semex meeting and they say Immunity+ is the real deal, has helped them get into more commercial herds because they are impressed with the results of the imm+ calves.

I only have extremely limited experience, with a few Monument Impression calves.

I haven't noticed them being any healthier than any other calves. In fact I have had quite a few Impressions with hernia infections.

One bull that I have used whose calves have without fail had no health issues is a bull called S-S-I Mozygus PP red. His calves have been a joy to rear!!

bulling cows to Impression at the minute at work (400 cow commercial herd) hope they do well. Both health smart and imm+ seem like brilliant programs if they work!

I've read the fine print on the studies they did and it seems that it's largely a marketing ploy from Semex to say that they have uniquely healthy bulls. Imm+ is highly correlated with other health traits such as PL, DPR and SCS but since other AI units such as Genex or Alta have higher health bulls on average for those traits Semex has had to find an alternate route to market to commercial. Imm+ is just the 10% of bulls semex has that are highest for DPR and SCS. Compare the top 10% health trait bulls from genex or alta and they would be the same if not much higher than semex's.

And other units will do anything to act like it means nothing but if they had the patent they would act like it is the real deal also.

University of Guelph did the study so it isn't just a marketing ploy it does have science and not just looking at what a proof sheet says. That said you can tell which bloodlines are good for Immunity so you can just use bulls from other units.

That pdf says there is [sign in to see URL] (50-70%) correlation of Imm+ with health and fitness traits such as DPR, PL and SCS. Yet those same health and fitness traits are said to be less than 10% heritable. With thousands of genes responsible for something as complex as the immune system of a cow I'm not sure how 25% heritability can be claimed when the same fitness traits that are highly correlated with Imm+ are much less heritable. Does anyone have a link to the U of G study?

I think Semex actually copied Alta's Conceptplus idea. Foregoing the industry standard will likely be more commonplace in the future as AI units try to differentiate themselves more from the competition.

Did some researcvh on Immunity+ for an essay i recently wrote and i really am quite convinced, although sumilar to most health traits the heritability is far higher meaning breeding for it is going to yield more positive results faster.

I think semexs main problem is also their greatest strength with it; and that is the fact its exclusive to them.

Great from a selling point of view but also difficult to sell when being belittled by rivals.
