Calves Bloating

I have reared my baby calves on a computerised calf machine for about 4 years now.

I must get about 10 calves a year that bloat repeatedly. They don't bloat to the extent they need the gas released. I do treat them with liquid parafin and anti-inflammatory but most of the time they are back to normal within a few hours. But it can happen 4 or 5 times to some calves. These calves are usually suffering some degree of scour or just recovered from a scour. Most of them get over it and don't suffer too badly long term. However, I have lost 2 to this. One, couple of years ago, I think got stuck under a gate while lying flat out whilst bloated. The other I found this morning. It looked to have recovered from a scour and had not been on the calf machine alarm list for days and out of the blue I found it dead this morning.

My vet has no real explanation. The most he has suggested is that there a build up of various scour causing bacteria that are causing it.

Has anyone else encountered this? If so, did you find a solution?

Computerized feeder here as well. We had exactly the same problem lost a couple as well and it was high bacterial counts in the milk causing bacterial overgrowth in the gut. Fixed that and haven't had a problem in a couple years.

Solution, clean everything better and probiotic in the milk.

How often do you replace the pipework between the bowls and the station?

sometimes bloating is caused by the wrong bacteria in the gut......I had one last week bloat out of the blue and not want to have its night feed.I squirted 10ml of white "injectable" penicillin down its throat with a syringe and next morning it fed normally.Mornings I put a probiotic in the milk.Penicillan kills all the bacteria in the gut and the next feed hopefully the right ones are restored.

Thanks for the advice.

I spoke to the guy who sold me the machine and maintains it for me.

He suggested that I clean all the plastic pipe joints, the teat holder and the pipe in the pinch valve.
