Books!

Seeing as the film thread is being derailed by books, lets have a books thread.

What's your favourite "non cow" reading?

I'm one for sci-fi and fantasy myself. Sir Terry Pratchett (may he rest in peace) and Raymond E Feist being the authors of my favourite books.

Amazon making a pilot for The Man in the High Castle got me to check out the book and in turn I ended up reading a good chunk of the Phillip K. Dick library in the past few months.

Right now I'm doing a little non-fiction, The Guns of August, about the first month of World War I.

Good idea, Craiglea.

My favorites are almost all from Charles Bukowski.

Re: Books!

I just finished World War Z. A perfect toilet read. Short three to four page chapters.

I do enjoy the SciFi works of Steve Alten. Getting ready to start The Loch. I think it is about Loch Ness, but I really have no idea. I have read all his giant shark books.

Joseph Campbell's "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" is a great read, as is "The Power of Myth" with Bill Moyers. These are mostly comparative mythology/ philosophical in nature.

I don't agree with everything Campbell says, but his main theory has inspired some of the best films and stories of the last century.

Enjoy all Bill Bryson's stuff

Christopher Hitchens is always worth reading

Just finished an epic non-fiction read: The Better Angels of our Nature by Steven Pinker (it is worth the effort)

Best books on the Vietnam War: Fields of Fire/ Matterhorn/ Short Timers.

Funniest Autobiograpy of all time: Unreliable Memoirs by Clive James
