Re: Maxammon additive

I presume you are talking about the urea based additive for grain.

We used it for a couple of years.

Our nutritionist is very critical of the way it is marketed. In particular the claim about the increase in protein in the grain analysis. He says you are just adding urea, which you could do direct into your diet. He says that the cow still needs to use energy to convert the urea to protein and that the protein content of the Maxammon treated grain is incorrectly calculated and overstated.

We found the grain, which was stored in a clamp, like grass silage, was very stable and kept well all winter.

It is a lot of extra work handling the grain twice. While it has it's place allowing you to harvest when the grain is too ripe for crushing, it is expensive.

Not used it myself have a lot of friends that have.

First big push came 2012 when many used it after a seriously wet summer/harvest here and had mixed results. The main complaint being the grain did not keep in the clamp although from what the Harbro salesman said this was mainly due to people clamping it too high (needs to be a maximum height of 5ft for urea gas to work through it?).

Most people now who use it seem to like it as allows a higher proportion of grain to safely fed in ration, again not my own personal experience pub talk from friends who have!
