Calf not drinking/suckling
Any advice or tips on how to get a calf to drink/suckle?
heifer calf born Saturday morning and we still have to stomach tube it....won't drink from bucket or suckle from bottle, never had one this bad before.
Lively healthy calf otherwise

Re: Calf not drinking/suckling
Have you tried starvation?
An odd time we get a thick/stubborn calf, it's amazing what hunger can do!
Sometimes a shot of combivit gives them an appetite boost.
--- Please Sir, I want some more, cos as we all know 'every little helps'!

Re: Calf not drinking/suckling
Similar problem here with one born end of last week, even the Mrs can't do anything with it.

Re:
Will try the combivit Will, thanks
it almost seems like it cant swallow, but if that was the case wouldn't there be saliva dribbles?
The starvation method may be ok once it is a few days older, would like to get 4 - 5 days milk into it first
No point in sending your Mrs over here then Big Bird!!

Re: Re:
If I put a cow in the pen the calf ignores it.
If I try and get it to drink from bucket or bottle it takes 5 or 6 sucks then just stops.
But if I put the cow in then try to feed it myself it'll go and suck the cow.
At least it's progress.
It doesn't seem to use it's tongue as it should when I'm trying to feed it,

Re:
Progress is right, but do you want a suckler cow??
Sounds remarkably similar to our calf though we haven't tried the cow approach, still stomach tubing...

Short term I have a couple of cows that I've been suckling beef calves on before marketing then so it's not a huge problem.

Re: Calf not drinking/suckling
I had one this spring that I had to tube feed for 6 days before it started sucking the teat, very frustrating.
