No-Fla interview in HI
I read Holstein International's interview with Don Bennink of No-Fla Holsteins. It was a fascinating read.
The final paragraphs left me thinking and slightly confused.
Don spent the whole article saying how type merit was irrelevant and that he really did not want tall and angular cows. Then he revealed an example flush mating where he was using Sandy-Valley Saloon on a donor with exceptional health traits.
Saloon strikes me as a bull that is the total antithesis of Bob's breeding goal. Yet here he was flushing with him.
Did this imply that selection for generations for health traits had hurt production?

Re: No-Fla interview in HI
It's probaly a mating that a stud wants.

Re:
He probably feels he can get a little more production out of them, they would still have decent health traits and the Saloons would probably breed back to high health bulls.
Doubt the mating would be for a stud since Saloon is a "old" bull, but you never know.

Talking to the bosses of one of the studs the other day and they are still using supersire as a sire of sons.
Reading other stuff by No Fla Holsteins. Saloon dosent seem like their type of bull but hey the right mating with a heap of health maybe.

Re:
It wouldn't be a bad idea to use Saloon as a sire of sons or other proven bulls because Saloon was out of a proven bull when a lot entering AI the same time of him weren't, showing it can be done in the genomic era.

Re:
They milk 4000 cows, I doubt Saloon gets much use. I was lucky enough to spend a day at North Florida in July 2012. Don Bennink very kindly gave us a couple of hours of his time. Quite a trek to get there, but well worth it. Easily one of the best herd visits I have ever experienced. As a result of that visit I sold Emulate as a genomic young sire, good decision.

Re:
I thought it a fascinating article, if more Holstein breeders shared that No_Fla mindset I feel the Holstein breed would be in a much better place.
