Composite Dairy Cattle Registry - December 2016 Elite Cow List

The ]Composite Dairy Cattle Registry in reviewing the December 2016 Elite Cow List, representing the top 5% of the cows (registered and grade) that are enrolled in DHI, continues to show the interest and influence that crossbreeding has on the industry.

With a total of 382,493 cows on the list, Crossbred cows continue to dominate the top position in every breed category.

The numbers for the breeds that the Composite Dairy Cattle Registry represents was 69.5% which is up 2.2% from the August list of cows excluding Holstein and Jersey.

Top Swedish Red cow had $957 NM$ and is sired by 249SR2483 – VIKEN FOSKE

Top Finnish Ayrshire cow had $850 NM$ and is sired by 263AY2516 – RANTA-AHON PASSELI

Top Montbeliarde cow had $842 NM$ and is a 257MO1001 - PLUMITIF daughter.

Top Fleckvieh cow having $731 NM$ and is sired by 297FL1014 - BFG RUAP 10-191085

Top Red cow had $723 NM$ and is sired by 236SR1091 – R FACET

The sire of the most animals in each breed group had some changes from previous evaluations for the Swedish Red, Finnish Ayrshire and Fleckvieh and are as follows:

Red Dane 236SR1091 - R FACET
Swedish Red 249SR1011 - B JURIST-ET
Finnish Ayrshire 263AY4412 - SAMMATIN VALPAS
Montbeliarde 257MO1001 - PLUMITIF
Fleckvieh 297FL1034 - BFG MANITOBA 10-188196

The numbers for each breed sire are:

Ayrshire (all) 1,742
Ayrshire (Finnish only) 497
Brown Swiss 2,823
Guernsey 678
Holstein 296,019
Jersey 69,372
Lineback 1
Montbeliarde 105
Milking Shorthorn 346
Normandy 2
Norwegian Red 3,425
Red Dane and Red Dairy 925
Fleckvieh 145
Swedish Red 6,303
WW 9
XD 1
XX 3
Other (unknown sire) 629

The Elite cow list is very interesting. In an overview we continue to see that there are many animals that have incorrect breed codes which is an issue with all breeds.
