compare Ayrshire and Jersey cows

I am an old dairy farmer who has not had milk cows for many years. Used to keep a registered holstein herd.

I am now thinking of setting up a small registered herd again as somewhat of a semi retirement project. I very much like the dairy business and want to get back into it but not on a big or commerically viable scale.

I am not impressed with holstein cattle as I consider that they just have too many health problems.

I am considering Ayrshires and have in fact bought two quality yearlings. I am also wondering about Jerseys.

Can anyone give me their comments between these two breeds.

I am certainly left with the impression that Ayrshires have minimal health problems and are quite hardy which is why I am leaning towards them.

Look forward to receiving comments and advise.

Thank you.

Ayrshires are tough, but their milk doesn't come back after setbacks like Holstein's do. I would think Jerseys are your breed of choice, milk fever aside they are easy keepers and highly efficient producers.
