Re: Cow Makers v Cow Enhancers in RED!!!!!!
*BR is not RED or BLACK. It is simply *BR. Totally different from either. Although is does express itself over RED when both genes are present.

Re: Cow Makers v Cow Enhancers in RED!!!!!!
there is a red inspiration out there who had a triple threat dam.her a b& w encore son in oz has thrown r&w calves. she had a b&w raider dau who had a r&W boulet charles dau. she has R&W triple threat sons and daus.
we sold an imported hattie son by skagvale emphasis to the neighbours and he threw r&w calves when we checked his pedigree he had 3 crosses of citation r way back

Re: Cow Makers v Cow Enhancers in RED!!!!!!
Ok, settle my curiousity. Integrity has thrown black red calves in England at least twice... One being a famous show cow who DNA types out to be a "true red" even though she turned black and whose calves are born red and turn black but also DNA type out to be "true red" and not the black red gene. Integrity's pedigree is devoid of most known Black-red carriers. Is this right MMT?
This would indicate another kind of inheritance even more complicated than the current known red inheritance. Sheik had at least 2 red daughters and he was not a red carrier. I beleive Inspiration had several daughters who were real red even though he is not a carrier.
Now how does all this work out?

Re: Cow Makers v Cow Enhancers in RED!!!!!!
I think the Shiek cow was a dominant RED. Fluke gene. Genervations has a son that has this dominant gene out of a shiek . There was a big deal about useing him because not all red offspring would throw red calves when bred to red.

Re: Cow Makers v Cow Enhancers in RED!!!!!!
Triday,
The show cow in the UK is an Integrity x Lindy x Triple Threat.
This may explain the source of her red factor.

Re: Cow Makers v Cow Enhancers in RED!!!!!!
But for her to DNA type red and be a black red she would had to have gotton it also(two sources on your standard mode of inheritance) from her sire? This being Integrity which I do beleive is impossible... Why I was curious. On a side note, does she have a red tint at all or is she genuinely black and white now? The article in HI stirred my interest and some friends and I had a rousing debate over the subject, which somehow included a few cold, frosty bevergaes. The general consensus seemed to be, we have no idea

Re: Cow Makers v Cow Enhancers in RED!!!!!!
The cow is as black as the ace of spades with a hint of copper colour. She is gene tested as a red carrier which comes from triple threat. She is not red and white nor is she black/red

Re: Cow Makers v Cow Enhancers in RED!!!!!!
Thats exactly how I understand it, but what about her sisters who also registerd as R&Ws, are they also BLACK?? and has this cow ever been parentage tested? Like I have stated before I have seen many, many daus of Astro Jet, Inspiration, Storm, Leadership ect, always heard the same thing "red as a fire truck" or "red as red can be" but EVERY SINGLE TIME, they were indeed anything but RED. It is totally frustrating, to have these guys (idiots)with B/R calves, regardless of the facts (even when its really obvious) assume that somehow B/R is red. Indies has it right on the money.

Re: Cow Makers v Cow Enhancers in RED!!!!!!
can I add a TWIST TO THE TAIL...
given that if you mate a red to a black the progeny are RB.meaning 50%
when you mate a fullblood simmental (being herdbook pure forever code 60 for those who are familiar with the swiss herdbook)to a purebred holstein , if there is any red you may get a R&W mostly you get shades of grey/lavender/fawn.with white legs and switch. The next generation to simmental will give you a 1 in 4 chance of red and white.generally from 4 calves I get a red , a black, 2 greys. If there is no red factor in the holstein it takes a long long time (20 years so far) to get the grey out. When I mate my 50% grey back to holstein I still get grey mating my 3/4 grey holstein to ayrshire I got Brown red, to guernsay I got brown red to holstein I finally got black and white, given my holstein sire has sired red and white I shall have to wait and see what the next generation will throw.
ok so how does one class grey?

This is the most interesting thread I have seen on cowtalk. The subject is thrilling. I love the great depth that you can enter into to discuss such a valuable topic. A great advert to encourage breeders and commercial dairymen to this forum!
