Volumes

Around here, there seems to be three different methods of measuring the volume of milk given by an individual cow. For the older farmers (i.e. those used with imperial measurements) we have gallons. More up-to-date farmers go with litres, which makes sense to me as we get paid by the litre. Then we have kilogrammes, which I always assumed to be a measure of mass (or weight) as opposed to volume.

My question is, does 1 Kilogramme equal 1 Litre, or does 1 Litre weigh 1 Kilogramme??

Perhaps someone can enlighten me emoticon

Its the same here Will, milk truck picks our milk up in litres, milk tester weighs each cow in KGs, and everybody only talks about LBs. 1 KG and 1 litre, as far as I know, are very close to being the same.

The Joys of living in a nation where we're half metric half imperial!

I've even tried the wee conversion programme I've got on my computer, converts almost anything you could imagine, but not Kgs to Litres!!

Perhaps it's time we called for industry rationalisation!!!

1 litre of water weighs exactly I kilogramme.
It all ties in together. I litre of water is contained in a box 10cm x 10cm x 10cm.
I cubic metre of water weighs 1 metric ton and is 1000 litres which weighs 1000kgs.

Milk weighs heavier than water though!!!! Due to solids, so I still think I am correct!! emoticon

You probably are right McKeague, but if 1 litre of milk weighs ROUGHLY 1 Kg, that's near enough for me!! I'm not gonna start multiplying and dividing by awkward numbers to convert one t'other.

Thanks all the same!

I know a local oldtime farmer who, when asked how much his heifer was giving in the day, replied, "Oh....a lot...man she can milk."

And how much meal is she getting? "Boys a dear, she can eat meal alright!"

"Good, good," said the bemused listener.
