I know we dn't always see eye to eye, but I wasn't sure what I'd done to deserve that one. emoticon

What's your plan for the calves then?

Re: Beef conformation

I'm going to have to be more careful with my smilies from now on!

I know a farmer who cross-breeds his herd with Montbelliarde and back to Holstein. Seems to be very pleased with the results. His herd average is supposedly around 9000l. He has white faced calves for the market which are apparently worth more, although to be honest, they just look like white-faced holsteins to me.

I have no plans to do anything like this, although I have toyed with the idea of a bit of brown swiss.

I will continue to breed a few to Limousin and Blue. It is thought by some here that the suckler cow is finished now that the sub has gone. Beef would be likely to come from the dairy herd. Time will tell....

Swiss isn't a bad cross, we used some, frighteningly more than fifteen years ago now(doesn't time fly when your having fun).

Mate bought some Montbelliarde and wouldn't repeat the process. I think he was short of the yield you mentioned by about half.

The few suckler boys round here aren't too optimistic about their future either.

Difficult to say how much beef will come from the dairy herd, the dairy herd might need all the replacement heifers it can get if a third quit.

Which brings us back to holstein bulls not being worthless. Spoke to someone over the weekend who said calves born after 1st June won't attract any subsidies(he should know more than me). Said his June born calves had made similar money to his earlier ones at market.

Holstein bull calves won't be worthless, they'll just be worth less!!!! There will always be someone out there who will see a few pound to be made from finishing Holstein bulls if he picks them up cheap enough. This year we were getting 130 euro per calf with lots of customers, we asked them if they would still be buying them next year and the majorityt said yes probably because they see the price dropping by at least half and they can finish them cheap. If we have to take 50 euro/head it'll do, better than nothing!!

As Charity would no doubt say it would be a small price to pay in the attempt to get a Gibson heifer calf!!!

Gibson! Crikey! More milk in a Montbelliarde.

Did you say you'd be happy with E50? Two years ago Holstein bulls weren't covering the cost of tags and the mart. Plenty went for a fiver. Plenty more were *h*t.

I think it means beef will be in the doldrums, no longer able to produce a good quality carcass. I wonder what will happen to the Angus type schemes?

PC crashing FOAF? We never hit the low point of £5 here in Southern Ireland but it does look as if quality Beef may suffer.

You obviously dont have any Gisons Foaf. Nothing wrong with their yields. Big fan of the bull. His milk yield has also risen in his proof, not many bulls do that!!!!

Gibson .. great type ..... but short of around 500kg milk and 35kg fat and protein to be of any use to me.

Getting back to the topic ..only have 2 straws of beef in the flask, probably wont use anymore after this, everything to the Holstein.I expect there could be quite a demand for heifer calves in a year or so.
