Emmerdale
Emmerdale on ITV is currently featuring a storyline where the only known farmer swapped tags and forged passports for over-age beef cattle.
Considering 'Andy' is the only farmer character in the show, I believe this gives the impression that law-breaking and crookery is common practice among farmers, and that the source of UK beef is not reliable.
I think this story does untold harm to the trust we need the public to have in us, especially during a period of depression in UK farming.
Can I encourage you to complain to OFCOM. The episode whereby the retagging, forging of papers and sale of the cattle was shown on TUE 3 AUG at 7pm. The link to OFCOM is as follows.

Re: Emmerdale
Here-here FOAF, I thought the storyline, while slightly ammusing, was not well timed at all. Considering that this programme is the closest that the vast majority of the population of the UK get to 'Farming' it does absolutely nothing for the hard work being done by LMC, FFA, NFU etc to get British meat back on to the BRITISH supermarket shelves, never mind getting it back onto the European market!
Can I second FOAF's request for all of you who have an interest in farming, and the entire industry of agriculture, to complain about this episode of Emerdale. While we as mainly dairy farmers (and related industrialists) may not be directly affected by beef trade, this has a knock on effect to the public perception of farmers and their produce.

Where do you get rid of your bull calves then Will?

Re: Emmerdale
Sorry Yacker, of course you're right! What I meant was that the majority of dairy farmers I know are just that, rarely keeping any kind of beef animal, either Holstein bull beef or otherwise.
Naturally we need a good beef market to get rid of bull calves, even if we are 'giving them away'!
The basic point here is that we as farmers should be making our voices heard in protest to this portrayal of our industry.

Re: Emmerdale
He he, I remember as a boy when the show was Emmerdale Farm, dad used to get mad as the farmer never did a jot of work. The game used to be spot the farm reference, and if you got one a month you were on a winner! Since Katie left, it aint worth watching!!!, and dropping the "farm" part to the title means it has little to do with everyday farm life. We need UK people to tune into the Archers!!!

Re: Emmerdale
I seem to catch the Archers occasionally in the car. Radio 4 is good stuff generally. The archers has kept a good hint of farming in the background when compared to Emmerdale.
I always thought that Jack Sugden was the most useless looking critter to put on a farm. He seemed to drive about in his defender quite a bit, and the other times when he was filmed at work, he was trying to fix a tractor that never did anything anyway.
