Balanced Breeding?
We talk quite often of balanced breeding. I tend to think of this as a blend of good production with good type. The question I wish to ask is what would your criteria for a balanced bull be? When do the scales unbalance?
ie in UK terms 15 kgs Fat, 15kgs Protein and over +2.00 type. Maybe in USA 50lbs, 50lbs and +2.00?
Maybe an unbalance is when we see some go for 30kgs of each and maybe under +1.00 type or conversely under 5kgs of each and +3.00 type.
Is balanced breeding the way we should all aim for?
Or are we all slightly unbalanced?

Re: Balanced Breeding?
ITS OK CHOOSING BULLS WITH 15KGS OF FAT ETC BUT DO WE ACTUALLY CHECK ON THIS 4 YRS LATER WHEN THAT STRAW OF SEMEN HAS FINISHED ITS LACT ,IS BALANCED BREEDING NOT ABOUT HAVING A CONSISTANT HERD THAT AVERAGES ON FAT,PROT,TYPE NOT ON BREEDING ONE COW, THERE ARE HERDS THAT COULD USE MOST BULLS AND DAUGHTERS WOULD STILL AVERAGE WELL DUE TO YRS OF BALANCED BREEDING THAT IS WHAT WE WANT

Re: Balanced Breeding?
I think that "balanced breeding" is the use of bulls in a balanced way.
Good breeders are able to combine "unbalanced" bulls within their breeding programme and still achieve a balanced result.
The skill comes from matching strengths to weakness's and having an instinct for the likely outcome of your breeding decision.
