Ted Burnside
we just got the sept 2003 holstein international and hubby was full of glee1
apparently ted burnside is finally having second thoughts on his genetic assesment system1!
Now he says "bull proving programs must be revamped to get an average of 200 daus /bull in the first crop so we can get meaningful proofs on fertility, disease resitance and other componants that contribute to herdlife" Also they should all be DNA'd.
And"unfortunately BLUP tends to increase inbreeding rates because the close relatives of the highest ranking animals also rank high."
Now he says "if we put say 20% or more selection weight on female fertility, disease incidence ,and make use of indicators of disease resistance such as somatic cell score, for about the next 20 years then we may save the holstein cow.We should focus on key traits for conformation like udders and feet&legs, plus protein and with some weight on fat yield, and we must be content to let size, stature and other traits change as the selection process for profitibilty dictates"
So is he right?

Re: Ted Burnside
My guess is if Ted was to cast a vote, for art or science, he may well be the only one to choose science.
Smart man, he certainly is not crazy, but he also doesn't milk cows. When he was on about his team program, I was openly critical of it, not sure if it was practiced in other countries, but it was a failure over here.
I do agree for the comercial breeder, Scandinavian breeding programs are miles ahead. Those who want the highest milk, why hasn't anyone ever sourced, the Isrial cow population??
The selection process for profitability, means different things to differant people. When people stop paying top dollar, for the( best looking) heifer in the pen, I will stop worrying about breeding for type.
