Show Cows- Vanity or Sanity?

With the show season in full swing and a lot of the debates aired on this forum page seemingly on type versus index, is the showring relevent to the modern u.k dairy farmer? If so what are the benefits and if not where can the showing fraternity get closer to it's potential customers of the future?

SANITY
It's where you find out how good the cows you have at home really are!!!!!
As I walk round the shows I don't many cows that can't pull their weight in the parlour anymore. Certainly not at the top end of the lines!!!!

Shows are the hub of industry get togethers. They are great fun for the exhibitors and ring experts alike. Its great to see the wonderful cows on show. Is it relevant to modern day milk production? probably not. But who cares. It brings lots of people together and that can't be a bad thing. It is always great to see young breeders showing their home bred cows and taking on the big boys. Sometimes they win and thats great too. Congratulations must go to Ed Seaton for being Premier Exhibitor at this years Royal. A great acheivement especially with all those home bred cows.

much thanks must also go to all the exhibtors that supplied the free drink. There generosity made my first royal show experince very enjoyable. much appreciated, espically smiddiehill who unfortunately had some left over!!!!!

but on a more serious note it is the best way of advertising not only your herd but also yourself as a manager and breeder of holsteins.

Shows also give a chance for up and coming breeders to learn from the older heads. Just an evening spent listening to some of the 'greats' can be worth years of making your own mistakes.

There have also, occasionally, been show cows who turned into great brood cows. This includes producing the odd high production sire, like Inspiration. I am also fairly sure that jabot's grand-dam was an All-American.

Quite often it is the cow that finishes slightly down the line, with the right pedigree and production that starts the great family.

Shows mean different things to different people, but they are a useful opportunity for any young breeder, even if it's just to drink beer, Sperrin.

Yes shows are important, they always have been and always will be, as far I can see, probably one of the most influential cows of all time was a highly successful show [sign in to see URL] All Time American Aged cow and unanimously being voted Queen of the Breed.... Yes Glenridge Citation Roxy Ex97, I bet breeders all over the globe apprecite her contribution to the breed whether they be commercial or pedigree.
Who knows what the story would be if she hadn't received the press and publicity as a direct result from the show ring, so as for Vanity or Sanity, ....... I think it's 50 / 50, but it's great fun

Sanity, no question! Its what we are all aiming for as pedigree breeders (I HOPE)! Theres no better feeling than when the judge pulls you out first, sometimes they get it wrong but then that all adds to the excitement doesn't it! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hey Mikey ... Yes of course we are all vain about our show cows - I don't suppose we would do it otherwise.
Even the most commercial farmer still has his favourite animal to look at... it's just that she is about 58 inches.
Therefore for me it's a bit of both "Vanity" & "Sanity" as every pot has a lid!

Sanity by a long way ... theres very few of them old style showmen left that think they have some god given right to win whatever type of cow they turn up [sign in to see URL] nothing better than seeing a cow with your own prefix on at the top end of a class even if she doesnt win, especially at a high profile event like the Holstein show or Great [sign in to see URL] is capable of breeding a show even if we dont have time to show ourselves .. if you think you have a great show cow but cant show it find someone that will even if you have to sell them it .... doesnt matter what its by its worth a tremendous amount of money if the cow is a great 1... found this our myself a few years back with a F16 xDagger, paid for a decent set of feed barriers with that money emoticon .So sanity by a street even if we all seem to require liver transplants at the end of the show season
