Re: Type Merit Vs Bull Linears
there appears to be a real inability within the industry in general to distinguish between, dairy character, frailty and condition score.
Once upon a time the holstein had an ability to when she was close to drying off to putting on condition and when she calved 6 weeks later to slowly peel it off and peak 6 - 8 weeks after calving.hopefully getting back in calf.
these days when the classifier comes and looks at our stale heifers we get caned for lack of dairy character!!
it seems to us that classification along with the show ring are getting further away from commercial reality and as long as the obession with high 2 yo milk continues things will not improve.
My husband ,along with several other concerned breeders , has been meeting with our class commitee to try and get our point of view over, the message being high vg heifers do not make long lived cows.(I expect a flurry of disputes here!!)All getting back to things discussed here. And as I lost my train of thought and need to get down to the dairy to help milk I will continue this discussion later after i reevaluate things from the pit!!

They still do .. just some people are scared of feeding their cows to attain this gain in body condition.

this happens in the UK as well. cows or heifers that quite rightly are putting on condition in late lactation either get left for another day or score lower than they maybe should.
It is a difficult one for the classifier because he only gets to see for a couple of minutes what we see all year.
Normally at some stage of their lives they will make their score, but accidents can happen and holes get created in pedigrees as a result.

Re: Type Merit Vs Bull Linears
Things would improve if we could get a classification visit every 7 months instead of every 8/9 months which is happening at present. Cows/Heifers are either too fresh or too stale or dry for them to look their best.

Re: Type Merit Vs Bull Linears
A special visit could be the answer, depends on how you weigh up the cost of a visit with the benefits of getting them at the right stage.
