Re: Show Heifers??

I have to agree that too many judges do not know the difference between a dairy heifer and a skinny heifer. We need some condition on yearlings especially, but they can still have some condition and be open ribbed and clean boned. Too many cannot tell the difference.

I believe the growth and condition is greatly based on genetics. Management can definitely have an impact, but big heifers come easier out of big cows.

But why are we so concerned with size? Again the judges. I believe too many are not confident identifying the BEST heifer and will go woth the BIGGEST. Most heifers at shows are big enough - so I say place the BEST heifer on top. But no one seems to do that.

Re: Show Heifers??

The best judges always put a BIG heifer down, if she looks like she spells wood. Sometimes though I feel they get too concerned with a uniform grouping, when they should just concentrait on each individual, so what if the grouping isn't uniform. Another problem is when heifers are equall, size makes a placeing easy, but there are lots of judges who judge the halter when there is a close placing, and it makes it pretty hard for joe average, to get by this.

At Wisconsin State Show the winning fall yearling was 2 inches off of everything else, but was the best heifer there; the others were just big, thick, and ugly so not always do they go with the biggest heifer.

Great to hear that someone went with QUALITY not size. Who was the judge and who was the heifer?

Ken Empy was the judge and the heifer was Crestbrooke Encore Classy owned by Kristin and Kyle Natzke.

The Junior 2 is owned by Railane Holsteins; we had one 5 year old there she placed 9th. She got pulled in line in 6th, but doesn't have the rear udder to compete once you get her in line. We have a 64 inch Dixellen Design 125000 pound cow who is just fresh and looks to go 94 in August, I am very excited about this cow.
